How is AutoCAD Map 3D different from ArcGIS?

I'm going to be learning AutoCAD soon- as I've been told it's good to know (although I really know nothing about CAD beside its use in 3D modeling)- and found that they also make AutoCAD Map 3D. I guess that is a standalone application- correct me if I'm wrong.

Now, I've been actively using ArcGIS for about 5 months now, but haven't touched it's 3D analyst tool. I am sure that AutoCAD Map 3D is more technical and offers more flexibility than Arc's 3D analyst tool- but my question is how, and why would I use one over the other?

Thanks for helping out the new guy.

Recently there was the same question - How is AutoCAD Map 3D different from ArcGIS?

And, in my opinion, the answer was generally good.

Map 3D:

Despite its ability to connect to various formats of data (shapefile, gdb, raster, WMS, etc.) Map 3D's strength is drawing.

ArcGIS:

Despite its ability to drawing geometric objects, its strength is analysis, specifically geospatial analysis.

Both programs can 'present' or 'illustrate' data. Map 3D is considered by many to be a better illustrator whereas ArcGIS is superior when it comes to analytics.

This is NOT to say Map3d can't or shouldn't be used to analyze data nor does it mean ArcGIS should NOT or can't be used for graphic presentations, it merely points out each program's strength when compared against the other.

If you want to go off-roading then a customized Jeep 4-wheeler is better suited for your drive. But......if you want to take high speed turns on paved streets then a Lamborghini Huracan is better. Although the difference in vehicle type is accentuated using this analogy, it emphasizes 'suitability' must be considered when making a comparison. Because the difference in Map 3D and ArcGIS are more subtle than automobiles, their strengths and suitability tends to get overlooked.
