Creating surfaces in AutoCAD Map 3D

Good Morning,

Does AutoCAD Map 3D have the ability to create surfaces from polylines? I have LiDAR lines that came in as 2D polylines. I added elevations to the polylines as necessary. I'm used to Civil 3D where I can add countour lines, spot elevations, and boundaries to create a surface. Can the same be done with Map 3D?

thank you,

Hello

As far as I know, ACAD MAP can't create 3D DTM from 2D contour lines (or from 3D points) !?

You need ACAD CIVIL to do that ...

But with some LSP (or DLL DotNet) routines, you can get some results on ACAD or on ACAD MAP or on ACAD Architecture ...

From 2D contour lines, you can get 3D points ...

And from 3D points, you can use a "Triangulate" routine and get thousands of 3DFaces showing you a kind of 3D DTM !?

There are some features:

MAPSURFACEMANAGER - "create raster-based surfaces from point cloud data", "GeoTIFF or ESRI ASC",

MAPCREATESURFACE - "create raster surfaces from survey data", "GeoTIFF file".

But I did not use them.

Hello

Yes but it is not from classic geometric entities !

Sorry, you can't create surface for polylines in Map 3D. You'll need to use toolspace in Civil 3D.

Map is well suited to creating small scale (zoomed out) maps, such as a big and wide area, e.g. a county or a state. It's also good for creating a theme using the Map Task Pane. You can get creative and combine small scale maps with an elevation theme using free downloadable DEMs. You can even generate contours from DEMs. Images below are Mt. St. Helena, Washington.

Yeah, C3D is excellent  for creating surfaces for construction purposes. Map 3D gives you the capability to present data in different ways. The examples above shows slope and elevation data. Of course, different types data will likely use different presentations. The last image shows a theme being combined with vectors.
