AutoCAD Map 3D and it's Recommended Requirements.

So, at my company we use the Map 3D Toolsets to measure various types of rooms and spaces in a given building using a digitized polyline to input information and then extract that information and upload to large project manager databases. Some times we are required to clean up large files that can be anywhere from 6 to 10MB, sometimes even bigger.

As with anything else, you come to a time where you are forced to upgrade. Often times in a company the ones making the final decisions on what to upgrade to, do not have a great deal of understand as to what a CAD operator does or needs. So it can be frustrating dealing with those issues.

We are in the midst of upgrading both our software and hardware and I am just wondering, those of you who have CAD 2019 with the 3D Map Toolsets, what your experiences are as far as system requirements go. There is he Minimum and then there is the recommended. We always go recommended, but I wanted to check with some of you, to see what you recommend.

Right now we are on a 3D Map 2018 with Lenovo Windows 7 PC's. i7-6820HQ CPU @ 2.70GHz (I wanted above 3GHz on this) with 32gb of RAM. NVIDIA Quadro M2000M video card. We also run all the basic Microsoft Office stuff, Excel (we use a ton), Word, Outlook. Also run Mozilla Thunderbird email. We also use a data transformation tool called FME, as well as a program that manages a job ticket system called OSvC, which is something we will be moving away from at some point to a program called Unifier. OSvC and Unifier and another program we will be involved with called Fusion are all Oracle Cloud Integrated based software.

So we will be moving to new laptops that operate from a docking station with duel monitors. Based on the information listed above and Audodesk's recommended settings:

  • 3+ GHz processor; Multiple processors: Supported by the application
  • Memory 16gb
  • High Resolution & 4K Displays:Resolutions up to 3840 x 2160 supported on Windows 10, 64-bit systems (with capable display card)
  • Video Card: 4 GB GPU with 106 GB/s Bandwidth and DirectX 11 compliant

Does anyone see where we should probably exceed those recommendations? I feel we should go 32gb of RAM at the very least on all this. Very interested in hearing some of your opinions on this.

Thanks!

Hello

If you are going to use MAINLY 2D DWGs / DATAs, the graphic card is NOT Important !

A Nvidia Quadro Serie 2000 is quite Enough ! ... Or an equivalent GEForce ...

With very large / huge 2D DWG, the most important is the basic speed of the processor and enough memory!

I am using sometimes 2D DWG with a size between 200 - 350 Gb ... NO problem with a low cost graphic card and 32 Gb memory and a FAST Core i3/i5/i7 with 4 Cores (and 4/8 threads) !
Loading of the 350 Gb 2D DWG : 3-10 mn depending of the hardware ...

YES a very fast Core i3 (4 Cores/4 Threads) like the Core i3 8350K (Basic speed = 4.0 Ghz) is OK !!
And the latest Core i3 9350K is a little bit faster : 4.0-4.6 Ghz !

FAST Core i3/i5/i7 means a basic speed with a minimum of 3.5-4.0 Ghz + Turbo Mode.
For exemple the good old Core i7 7700K (4.2-4.5 Ghz) is excellent !

If possible a fast SSD/M2 !

If we are speaking about Notebook, the basic speed of mobile processor is about 1 GHz LESS ! So loading / zooming will be slower ...
