View Multiple Layouts

In acadlt 2016, is there a way to view/edit multiple layout tabs at the same time, side by side?  My sheets are drawn all in paper space so I can not use viewports.

Welcome to the Forums

No you can't edit multiple layouts at the same time.

What exactly are you trying to do? We may be able to suggest a workaround

I'm create electrical schematics.  My company uses paper space only.  I'm having to go back and forth between tabs to add my references.  Just looking for an easier way without going to ACADE.

Can you post a couple of screenshots to show us exactly what it is you're referencing.

Basically, I want to view a layout tab while editing another.  Just like having multiple viewports on a layout.

Any reason your edits can't be done in modelspace?
Are these references just sheet "pointers', like find this detail on sheet 10 of this set type thing? If yes, SSM might be able to help automate the task (not what you want, but a different workflow altogether).

OR

Open multiple LT sessions, park each on separate monitors or side by side if you only have one monitor. Remember, only one session can be used for editing, so the other is for viewing only.

Or talk the boss into ACADE.

Hello @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Autodesk community!

What if you have two instances of AutoCAD running side by side?

Something similar to what is explained here: How to view drawings side-by-side in AutoCAD

Thanks for the suggestions.

My preference would be to work in model space but that's not my company's "standard practice".  Even though I've shown multiple benefits of doing so.

I don't see how multiple instances will work being it's one drawing file.

Other ideas?

Have two instances of AutoCAD open. Have the same drawing open in both (one will be read only) then edit in the non read only drawing

Yes.  I understand how to use and the limitations of 2 instances.  Not really what I was looking for.

Sounds like this would be a good future enhancement.

@Anonymous,

I'd also recommend you leave that feedback here:

https://www.autodesk.com/company/contact-us/product-feedback

I can also make an internal comment on this as well and provide an update should something be released that falls in line with what you're looking for. Smiley Happy

I'm following up on this post.  I also want to view two layout tabs side by side at the same time in ONE instance of an AutoCAD file.  This seems really simple and happens quite easily in Revit.  Why can I not figure out how to do this in AutoCAD?  Please advise.

You can do the same workaround with just one program instance.

Open the second file session(readonly) and place bothe side by side.

Read this thread and you see: There is no feature like that

"This seems really simple"

Yes, simple!

Programs with this feature: Click, done

Prgs where it is impossible: Click often you want, you can't reach this goal.

@cadffm, thanks for such a quick response!  I sincerely appreciate it!

OK.  just seems really obtuse to have to open a second read-only copy of the same file.  Seems like it would take more memory than just dragging a layout tab over onto the other screen as we do in Google Chrome, Revit, or many other software packages these days.

Yeah, but this thread is over 5 years old now, so I was hoping the good folks at Autodesk had "gotten with the program" and added this simple but extremely useful feature.

You lost me there.  I think you are just trying to say yep... it IS really simple, but you can't get there from here!  🤣

Right: Still, you can't do that in this program.

"OK.  just seems really obtuse to.."

Right,

but we (all Users like you) can just explain the program and sometimes we can offer workarounds.

Only the manufacturer of the software can change this.

Send feedback to Autodesk and cross fingers.

You are not the first and not the last who like to do it.

Expecting one program to act like another is simple. Getting it to do so is an entirely different story, especially when they are completely different platforms. When asking how to do something, you can use another program as an example but to say it has to be simple because this or that program does it is expecting too much and does nothing to get you what you want.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.
