Support files error

Hi,

I tried to find the solution in the forum, but I did not find any simillar thread so I am sorry, if there is one.

I use .lin files for line definition. I have all support files linked in options/support file search path and used custom support file acadlt.lin provided by the creator of the line types.

It has worked like this for years. Recently I experience after some time having autocad running, when I want to load a line type, an error ocures: Bad definition of XXX at line YYY of file \\\App Data\Roaming\Autodesk\AutoCAD LT 2023\R29\enu\Support\acadlt.lin

After restarting autocad everything works fine for some time.

Does anyone  know what could cause this problem?

Cheers, Jakub

1.  This file is not the original 2023LT ACADLT.LIN,

2. this file is quite old old old

3.this file content is NOT for a ACAD(LT).LIN, it contains the metric definitions from ACAD(lt)ISO.lin

Sad, a Nightmare, what are you doing(over years I think ?)  😑

---

Back to your issue: You forgot to copy the  cadkon.shx file to the supportpath of your choice.

Thanks for the reply!

The file is in set of files that provides the author of the set, which has been updated 2021 - maybe, they dont need to change the .lin file? I am not an expert on this, just user.

The cadkon.shx file is located in the support file path.

Over past years I have been happily working without having this problem. What I dont understand is, that it does work for several hours, then it stops and after restart of the app it works again.

Best, Jakub

The autodesk part of this content is from 2004 or older, but this is not so bad - the silly part is

and it contains the definition for metric files (acadiso.lin) and not for imperial units - what is acad.lin for.

It is still a nightmare to see such things (for me)

>>"Thanks for the reply!"

Your welcome

>>"The file is in set of files that provides the author of the set, which has been updated 2021 - maybe, they dont need to change the .lin file?"

I'd better say nothing more about that.

>>"The cadkon.shx file is located in the support file path."

Is it a local folder or extern in your network?

>>"Over past years I have been happily working without having this problem."

Okay, but you don't know how many people have had trouble with your data 😬

Let's talk about your current problem and not what I think of the file.

>>"What I dont understand is, that it does work for several hours,"

>>"then it stops and after restart of the app it works again."

Q1: How do you start your program?

Q2: Acad often get trouble with internal memory mangement, perhaps there are other issues too

App-Restart is a good move and depend of the file content and commands

can happen that you have to restart very often (most users never have a problem, but others are very badly affected)

Did you notice any other problems? Problems with the selection or with the ESC key?
Then this would be an indication.

The problem is clear, if the message appears - AutoCAD have no access to the

PLYN symbol from cadkon.shx

Means: No access to cadkon.shx OR access to the wrong cadkon.shx, which doesn't contain the PLYN symbol

You do not have this SHX file that is required, that's all you have to find from somewhere, hope it is correct, place it in LT's search path, then the problem should go away

Well I use metric files. I might copy data from imperial units files though.

>>Is it a local folder or extern in your network?

It is on system disk in windows user documents folder (there is only one user on this pc with admin rights).

I tried to replace it in folder straight in disk root without any change.

>>Okay, but you don't know how many people have had trouble with your data

We use this set mainly because 90% of our technical subcontractors use it, so we need it, in order to view their files right. It is locally very common.

>>Q1: How do you start your program?

with default desktop shortcut leading to: Autodesk\AutoCAD LT 2023\acadlt.exe

With selection I run into trouble only e.g. when using MATCHPROP in viewport with display plot styles ON and run across big block, it jams for several moments (guess too much to compute), but no error in the end. I have not experienced any ESC key erroes yet.

Thanks for the clarification. I dont understand, why the file after running for some hours appears incorrect or without access. I havent find any specific moments that started the error yet.

Thanks for your reply!

The cadkon.shx file is in the search file. It does work well with all the line types, but after some time the file starts to seem missing or incorrect and all the line types, that used to work fine, are wrong. Restart of the app helps to solve this issue.

Glad you figured it out: wondering why you did not do that in the first place, it is the first thing anyone in tech support asks you to do before they even start, right?

>>"Well I use metric files."
If your MEASUREMENT in your files is set well for it (value 1),
they doesn't use this "acadlt.lin" file! (except you select the file manually to load linetypes)

>>"We use this set mainly because 90% of our technical subcontractors use it, so we need it,"

Linetypedefinitions are stored in your DWG files!
*.LIN files are only the source to import a new linetypedefinition into a DWG,
after this, the file and how they displaying has nothing to do with any *.lin file.

>>"with default desktop shortcut leading to: Autodesk\AutoCAD LT 2023\acadlt.exe"
The default target is "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD LT 2023\acadlt.exe" /language "<lan>", Right?
and in this case it can not be the reason why it works after a restart. thx.

yeah, that's a bit strange until we find the answer.

-

1. Check where the file cadkon.shx is

if you have trouble with them
2. Open OPTIONS dialog, FILES tab, and entlarge the SECOND node (not the first as in your picture)
is the folder with file 'cadkon.shx' inside listed?

If not: We have a problem

If yes: Start from top of this list and search in winexplorer if you can finde another 'cadkon.shx' file
in th folders what are listed above the folder where you expect the right place of 'cadkon.shx'
Is there another file with that name?

Out of more ideas, except a real internal memory problem of AutoCAD (pure guessing)

He know that and wrote it too 😉 ("After restarting autocad everything works fine for some time.")

, the pain and question is: Why does it happen again and again?

they stated "used to work" so they changed something big that's not mentioned yet. Your guess is as good as mine.
Perhaps a VPN issue.
Remote work issue.
Bad installation.
Temp loss of LT's profile due to a shaky OS login profile.
limited-user OS login account.
"support files" are at the bottom of the search list, not at the top perhaps?
"period of time" is days not a couple of hours?
Not manually saving often or having way too many (crazy amount of) files open (grasping at straws here...).

What else did you and I forget to guess at for them to research?

I am sorry for mistification, indeed the value was set to 0 - changed to 1.

Thanks for the explenation. It is true, that when I use file with foreing line types they appear fine. Well than even more wierd is, that when the error happens, the lines drawn in the specific line style appears fine, but when I use MATCHPROP  on other line, or draw a new line/pline in the style, it does not appear as it should. Also in the upper panel in the line style rollout menu, the line preview appears wrong (I guess in a default unkown appearnce?), even it had been already loaded in the file before the error occured.

yes correct.

If not: We have a problem

There is only one folder in the list of Device Driver File Search Path:

C:\PF\Autodesk\AutoCAD LT 2023\drv

which does not contain the cadkon.shx

If yes: Start from top of this list and search in winexplorer if you can finde another 'cadkon.shx' file

Thank you very much for the time and effort spent!

I also have answers for the other reply from pendean which might clarify the problem.

Cheers, Jakub

Hi,

>>they stated "used to work" so they changed something big that's not mentioned yet. Your guess is as good as mine.

Switched from LT21 to LT23 but still same.

When I am thining back, I guess it started after a coplete new windows install.

With the system there is one anomaly. We accidentaly installed windows home verison on this computer and bought windows pro licence which is not compatible for activating the system (but all other software had been installed - there has not been time yet to reinstall whole pc since it seems to work) and the computer is still running windows 10 with unfinished activation.

>>Perhaps a VPN issue.

cant tell, will offline atempt rule this option out?

>>Remote work issue.

There is no remote work

>>Bad installation.

I tried to download a newer version with clear install and still same.

>>Temp loss of LT's profile due to a shaky OS login profile.

Cant tell what does shaky OS login profile means. But I do lose Temp files even when the automatic deletion of temporary files was disabled in windows. Had to change the temp files for autsave of autocad in order to keep .bak files for crash incidents.

I was blaming the newer verison of Windows there had been W7 on this pc before.

>>limited-user OS login account.

There is only admin account on this computer.

>>"support files" are at the bottom of the search list, not at the top perhaps?

Found out on a forum, that Autocad might be sensitive on this so I tried to change the order of the files, but did not help.

>>"period of time" is days not a couple of hours?

It is usually hours minimum sometimes day or two. The period is inconsistent.

>>Not manually saving often or having way too many (crazy amount of) files open (grasping at straws here...).

I do not save very often (usually only when I export/share/close the file) and I do have usually quite alot (10+) drawings opened at a time.

Will try to minimize that. Now I am currently running two files for 10 hours without the error.

Does manual save time to time helps other way than data loss?

Thank you very much for the effort!

Best regards, Jakub

NOW acad doesn't use the acadlt.lin file. Please share your acadltiso.lin file,

I know the content of the original files, but for a better help I need to know

the content of your acadltiso.dwt.

MY I ask which template(.dwt) file you are using?
If it is not one of the original standard .dwt files, feel free to share your dwt for a better help.
While measurement is set to 1, acad lt will import linetypes from acadltiso.lin.

>>when I use MATCHPROP  on other line, or draw a new line/pline in the style, it does not appear as it should.

Because you mixed different linetype (and perhaps also hatch) definitions.

>>There is only one folder in the list of Device Driver File Search Path:

OH, my fail! I never realized that LT don't have the node I tought about.

Forget all I talked about the supportfolder (AutoCAD not-LT the second node isn't Driver File Search Path).
