save as command not working

Hi all,

acad lt 2014

windows 7 pro

Today I opened one of my acad lt 2014 drawings and immediately tried to do a "save as" to rename it in order to keep the original pure...so to speak.

I activated the save as command by using the file tab and selecting save as and then choosing drawing. Normal method, I have done it thousands of times.

Today it does not work.

The save as command shows up on the command line like you would expect, but no dialog box appears for me to select a location and enter the new name. It just sits like that until I hit esc at which point I am able to work on the opened file like normal and save that file like normal.

Also, if I start a new drawing from scratch (drawing 1 by default) and try to save or save as it will also not work.

Any Ideas what is happening?

Thanks

Paul

It sounds as if your dialog boxes have been switched off.

At the command line type in FILEDIA and make sure it is 1.

If you think the dialog is being suppressed, type in FILEDIA and set it to 1.

If you think the dialog is opening, but it's "off your screen", see this:

The off screen thing could be it...I usualy work with two monitors and I am currently just using the laptop screen. I will hook up to my second monitor and see if it is hiding over there.

will let you know,

thanks

That was it!

Hooked up secondary monitor and there it was.

Thanks!

When you say it requires you to press ESC to continue, that usually means the dialog is "off the screen".

You can test this even when your dialog is visible. Launch a model dialog and try to do anything interactive EXCEPT with the dialog. You can't until you close the dialog (which pressing ESC does).

Don't unhook the second monitor again before your test all the other popup commands you use often.

I know this chain is super old now but I had this problem and your "FILEDIA set to 1" solution worked! I had never had that happen before so just out of curiosity what would have caused the dialog box to become suppressed like that? Thank you for this information even 9 years later!

One of your custom LISP or tools (or add-ins or 3rd party add-on) did that, or another user did it for you, not much you can avoid if you find out what that is.

AutoCAD has a tool called SYSVARMONITOR, start it up, you'll see this variable in there (stock install unless you removed all the entries in it): activate it and have it ready to help you catch changes to this and a few other key variables that you feel you must have on (or off).
