First, please turn off the caps lock. It is considered shouting, although
with your frustration I imagine you might just be shouting at the computer!
When starting, AutoCAD assumes a new file with a default drawing name of
drawing1.dwg until you open an existing file or use saveas. Your problem as
I understand it is that AutoCAD is renaming existing files upon opening
them. When it happens, is there the original file still in the directory?
Use Windows Explorer to check it out. I just want to be sure I understand
the problem. Can you post one of the files, even a dummy file with one line
in it?
How are you opening the files? Are you using the file menu or the open
button? These can be programmed to operate differently. Does the problem
happen if you type ".open" at the command line? We can get into the Custom
User Interface, but the CUI is pretty complex for the first time user. Are
you part of a larger company that uses AutoCAD? Does someone else there do
customizing? If so, have them check the button in CUI if it only happens
with the button. If it also happens with the menu, but not with ".open" at
the command line, then your command has be redefined.
When you open an existing file, hit F2 and copy everything in the text
window. Post it here. There may be a clue in the text window.
One other question, does this only happen with AutoCAD? What about Word or
Excel?

YES, THIS HAPPENS WITH EVERY FILE I OPEN.
I CAN CREATE A NEW FILE, NAME IT AND SAVE IT, WHEN I GO TO REOPEN, IT
RENAMES IT AGAIN.
IT IS NOT READ ONLY (THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE)
WELL, WHEN I SAVE AS THE ORIGINAL NAME, FIRST I HAVE TO REMEMBER THE
ORIGINAL NAME AND THEN OVERRIDE THE ORIGINAL DWG FILE, THESE ARE SEVERAL
STEPS I WOULD LIKE TO AVOID.
WHEN I START AN AUTOCAD SESSION IT STARTS WITH DRAWING1, DRAWING2, ETC. IF
I EXIT AND RESTART, IT RESTARTS AT DRAWING1
??MACRO IN THE OPEN COMMAND??
YIKES.. I WISH I WAS MORE COMPUTER LITERATE.
I DO APPRECIATE THE HELP GUYS!!
