Merge Error

Hi,

Nowhere near an expert in CAD but I'm the only one in my org that has any knowledge of the software at all, so I'm the defacto SME for the agency and need some help. I was given a terrible file that has a drawing of a floor that has had multiple vendors and architects work on it. They've loaded this thing with over 600 layers, thousands of block references and xrefs that I have no access to.

I've been able to detach the xrefs, explode the block refs and have been painstakingly purge layers one by one because they nested blocks inside eachother, across layers, with associated xrefs and utilizing proxy graphics.

A real mess.

But, I am finally making some headway. The problem I'm facing now is that LAYMRG seems to have stopped working and if I go into the layer properties manager and right click to merge, I get the following:

Select object on layer to merge or [Name]:
Enter layer name or [?]:
Selected layers: A-FURN-P-FILE.
Select object on layer to merge or [Name/Undo]:
Select object on target layer or [Name]:
Enter layer name or [?]:
Regenerating model.
Command:
Unknown command "Y". Press F1 for help.

Of course, if I press F1, it brings me to the default help pop-up without any reference to the actual problem. Help?

After you've selected the objects on the layer you want to merge, you need to select an object on the target layer
