Don't edit standard macros, create your own.
Command: -LAYER
OR use TOOLPALETTE
create a TEXT on the right layer and drag them to the Toolpalette..
OR in new versions, use TEXTLAYER setting

This part of AutoCad is not my strength creating . A past fellow Cadder added something to a current text macro that would allow no matter what layer one was in to change to text layer automatically when using text. He since has gone and we updated our cad but it escapes me as to what he did with the macro.
Then read read my link to the Help[F1] about TEXTLAYER,
hopefully you are using a new version.
Next time, please add the information from your dialog, command: ABOUT to your thread,
in different Products (you posted in LT Forum, so you are using LT?) - and versions/updates
are different features (and bugs) available.
