Intel/Nvidia GPU AutoCAD usage incorrect (2019)

My Dell XPS 15 has a 1050ti inside it. I've set the Nvidia drivers to select the Nvidia GPU when AutoCAD runs. But it seems to be running BOTH the Itel integrated and the Nvidia GPU at the same time. I watch the useage of both GPU's in HWMonitor and can see spikes when panning, etc. I've also noitced the GRAPHICSCONFIG shows definitley not the NVidia driver I have installed. I thought it was the Intel driver but that number is not what intel shows on my system settings in windows.

I've tried turning off dynamic mode, which helped a bit- since with it on, I was pretty much unable to draw a line...

Something is definitely wrong- this laptop is more than capable of handling this program.

Your AutoCAD session is only using the GPU listed

Capture.PNG

But the rest of your system may well be using the Intel hardware default that is almost never turned off unless you specifically disabled it completely (if that is possible) at the Windows Settings/GPU Settings/Hardware boot up method.

What problem are you actually trying to solve here?

Is LT2019 fully updated?

Is Win10Pro fully updated?

What do the rest of your system specs look like?

Where do you store your DWG files? And how are you connected to that location?

Are you doing any type of sync with a cloud service?

I am trying to solve a severely slow AutoCAD performance. It's very laggy- as in, seems to be some heavy input delay.

Machine specs are definitely qualified, but here they are:

Dell XPS 9750

  • 4GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050Ti Graphics
  • 8th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-8750H
  • 16GB RAM
  • 4k touchscreen monitor

I have done some research and found some old versions of AutoCAD  on aptops with switching GPU functionality issues. The quoted response in  thread I found here is below but this was for 2015 and we're well past that now with no solution yet?

"This problem happens to laptop systems with two graphics cards and have Optimus(NVidia) / Switchable Graphics(AMD) technology enabled. We have been working with Nvidia for some time on this and a fix will be released soon. I have sent you private messages asking if you have interest to try out the Beta fix. If don't want to try the Beta fix for now, you can disable Optimus/Switchable Graphics in the BIOS as work around - the following link explains how to do this. http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Hardware/Disabling-nVidia-Optimus-amp-Perform-Clean-Install/m-p/436328... Thanks for your understanding,

Is this a Microsoft Surface Pro/Book by chance?

Here is the latest message from "autodesk" that I see in the forums on the topic https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-lt-forum/acad-lt-2019-performance-is-terrible/m-p/8075034#M16...

No one in here is "autodesk" for the most part, so you are going to have to start a support ticket at your account login
https://autodesk.secure.force.com/Customer/apex/Case_CustomerPortalLandingPage

In the meantime... what have you tried so far? Things worth exploring:
Do your laggy issues go away if you turn off hardware acceleration on that pop-up?

If you start Windows Task Manager, expand it to show more details and click on the Processes tab, how many "chromium host executables" and/or how many aecbrowser.exe sessions are running?

It's a Dell XPS 15 (9570 - latest model). The Surface book also has switching graphics capabilities so it would have the same issues.

I'm always frustrated with AutoDesk's stance on not certifying GTX cards for use in their applications. It's a bogus scapegoat, IMO, when they troubleshoot users problems. They are fully capable cards and I would bet the majority of ACAD users have that or even simple CPU integrated graphics. All of my desktop workstations have or have had numerous GTX cards in them and perform exceedingly well- no need for Quadro. But I digress...

Here's my task manager for AutoCAD process when open. Not sure why it's 32bit on a 64bit machine, though?

Running with Hardware Acceleration OFF is a little faster but definitely a lesser quality linework and some flickering of the cursor.

I've also set DYNMODE to 0 (was on 3 by default). I'd prefer to have this back at 3, but its so laggy that it makes drawing impossible when set to Hardware Acceleration OFF.  Tolerable with it ON.

"certifying GTX"

You are wrong (if i am right), Autodesk has nothing to do, it is a information from the gpu manifacture(nvidia)

AND  "certifying" is nothing else a TEST if the card together with this one driver works well or not, nothing more, nothing less.

And your first screenshot display that the driver (and perhaps the card) doesn't support all features.

(In some cases that information is incorrect vecause only some registry keys are set wrong)

If you talk about lagging, please test this only in new dwgs with new objects(not copied from other files) and all time saved in the native dwg format(dwg2018).

Because lagging can also have the source problem from the dwg content and in this cases you(we?) have to search the problem there - inside the dwg.

The drawing is fine. I run it on multiple machines, all are fine except the laptop. A new clean, blank LT template acts the same way with nothing in it.

The first screenshot I attached showing the hardware config was intended to show that I had it in basic mode, which should perform the best. Here's what it available if I turn things on: I did a follow up on the reported driver version and it is fine, actually. Just learned Nvidia has multiple driver naming schemes. I expected to see the WHQL naming which threw me off.

Begs the question why buy a device with the GTX product in the first place i that is the case, doesn't it 🙂

As a test, only a test, if you disable the GTX and let AutoCAD run on the Intel GPU do the problems go away?
