Hatched area (i.e ANSI 31) BACKBGROUND plots black - this is NOT a scale issue

I recently performed a 'reset to default settings' on my acadlt;   I'm experiencing a new problem with hatches.  They appear normal on screen but hatched area plots as solid black.   However; if I explode the hatch, it plots normally.

That's a workaround, but not how I want to proceed.  Is there some hatch setting I may have accidentally changed?

Thanks for your reply; however, I still have same result.  The hatched areas ( one is ANSI31 and the other is ARsand) both appear normal on screen. Plot preview,  with printer set to Acad presentation quality pdf, show hatched areas as black.  The ANSI31 area shows black but you can still make out the hatch lines - as a dark gray.  ARsand is probably similar.
