Finding Nested References

I need to re-path many external reference files in my drawing file. There are some reference files that are shown as a nested reference and when I click on this reference "Nested reference cannot change path.name or type" I know that this means that the reference is within another one of my reference files. How do I know which file it is within ??

When you are in the xref palette there are buttons in the upper right corner for tree view and list view. Tree view will show you which xrefs are attached to which drawings. you can also hit F4 for tree view and F3 for list view in the palette.

"nested" means the xref is inside one of the other XREFs, so you need to open that DWG file separately to make the change to its xref. You cannot do it from the very topmost file.

Try it.

Xreffing needs a major revamp, all the time you put linking this and the errors it brings....

On a more constructive note, is anyone able to tell me what the issue is here with this situation. Basically I got a lot of nested xrefs and I used the tree method to find the nested xref. However, when I open the xref then the not found xref works fine but in the main document not, why? Why doesnt it work and why cant I select a new path if it is not found?

Show us what you see please.

And I suggest you get in touch with the file(s) creator to explain their processes, perhaps they see logic in it that just needs an explanation.
