Copy and paste issues

Hi

I am trying to copy and paste a block from one drawing to another, but when I paste it does not show up. I have clicked on the layers tab and the layer has a green tick next to it, attached screen shot, how do you untick and is this the problem why it won't paste?

Thanks in advance

Does the block already exist in your destination drawing?

If it does the block you are trying to paste will take on the properties of the block already in the drawing.

Try pasting to 0,0 and then see if your block is there.

Are you able to post your block drawing and your destination drawing here so we can have a look at both. Also tell us the block name you are trying to copy and paste so we can have a look at the block as well and see if anything is wrong with it.

Thanks for your response, you may need to explain things to me as I am not technically minded!

So I have created a database of blocks from several drawings over time, I have never had this problem before, the new drawing I am trying to paste the block into was not in the destination drawing, however, I did try copy and pasting several times before I realized it was an issue, so I have some in the drawing but I can't see them.

The block name is 0. Equipment detail, half way down on the attached screen shot

The green tick is just to let you know which Layer is currently active. It could be that your block is inserted just off-screen, maybe you are zoomed in too far or too far out. It could be a problem with the scale of the block or a number of other issues. Can you post a copy of the drawing so we can see what is going on.

Hi,

I just noticed it isn't one particular block, I have a bad habit of not using different layers so any objects with the layer name, "0 Equip Detail" does not paste from one DWG to another? I have just also found that it is pasting a Xref address instead of the image (s) i am trying to paste?

Thanks

We don't know the layer of your objects inside of this block,

but the block reference on your screenshot is on Layer Equipment_Detail.

Copy&Paste doesn't change the object properties, so why you are talking about layer 0 Equip Detail ?

The other layer have to be THAW.

If objects inside your block are not on Layer0 or Equipment_Details, you have to turn on and thaw these layers to!

Sort test:

New drawing based on acad.dwt, works?

Then go to your dwg where you have the problem.

Modelspace, ctrl+v the blockreference

and turn all layers on and thaw.

Command:-LAYER

on *

Thaw *

Enter

In your target file, after

Are you trying to copy blocks, xref's, or images? You used all three in the same sentence? You really need to post a dwg or two, the original and the one you are copying into, so we can see what is going on, screen-shots don't give enough information.

It would also help if you gave us a step by step of exactly which commands you are using, eg. are you typing 'COPY' or selecting objects then using 'Ctrl+c'

Hi

I have attached 2 x DWG with notes.

The one named CAD 1 has the item i need to copy to a second drawing.

CAD 2 is a blank DWG which will not allow the item to be pasted

Thanks Lee

Your CAD2 drawing is certainly not blank it contains multiple objects (77) in modelspace, and is zoomed so far out that you cannot see anything which is why it makes you think that your block is not being pasted. You either need a new blank drawing to work from or do a lot of cleaning up to figure out what you do and do not need in this drawing.

I deleted all the items of the file before I sent it across as it contained work drawings, I must have missed the ones you found. Can you copy and paste the sink into the second document though?

Sure, once you paste the object just type 'select' and then 'l' (for LAST object) and properties will show you that the block is selected. It is just 1.6 million kilometers away from the drawing origin 0,0.

Digging a bit more the name of the block you are trying to copy already exists in CAD 2 and in this drawing it is an empty block, so yes it does copy over but becomes the same as in the existing block and therefore empty. THAT's why you don't see anything ahha. If you use design center (Ctrl+2) with drawing CAD 2 open and then find the block in the tree view of design center in CAD 1 right click and choose 'insert & redefine' then it will insert correctly. But you still would need to deal with being so far from the origin in this not blank 'blank' drawing

Thank you, I have used that as a workaround. For some reason, it has started working again as it was before I experienced the problem, very strange?
