AutoCad LT2016 DWG too slow

This may seem a bit vague, but I need to start somewhere.....

All my drawings are held in a doc management system (EPDM). It can take an age to open or preview a drawing, which leads me to wonder if AutoCAD doesn't like DMS's, or if there is a setting to speed things up. Some of the drawings are 2D conversions from SolidWorks, others are just large site assembly drawings and can be up to 40mb in size.

I've tried the usual purges and wblocks etc but to no avail.

If you can come up with a few suggestions, that would be great.

Definitely a size issue.

You need to get the size of the files down a lot.

Hi HW - thanks for the input.

I've tried reducing the file size but because of the complexity of some of the supplier supplied blocks it didn't help much.

I also wanted to go down the Xref route, but it's too late for that as it involves far too many drawings, and the company are not really interested.

We have upgraded from LT2012, and since then files have definitely taken longer to open.

Define these time period in something we can understand please.
And what OS are you running LT2012 in, and what did you upgrade to it from (and why)?
Where are the files stored? How are you connected to it?
What is your EPDM software?

Good morning Dean [my day is almost over :o)],

Windows 7 Pro 64bit

12Gb RAM

Files stored remotely, accessed through Solidworks EPDM

LT2016

NVIDIA Quadro K2200

If I select a folder it can take up to 30 secs to open, depending on the folder size. Opening a large drawing from there can take twice as long.

I'm not sure if this is an AutoCAD problem, or a network issue. Others in the office have no problems opening Solidworks 3D models, which can be much larger! This is what makes me think it's an AutoCAD issue.

Derek (with thanks)

One easy way to check is copy one of the larger files to your local drive and see what the performance is like opening just on your machine.

>>>...Files stored remotely<<<
still doesn't tell us much: what is that please? What speeds up/down?

See Steven's response for a quick test as well.

Hi Dean, sorry about the delay....the server is located in a different building, about 500yards away and is connected via an internal 1gb line. I've copied a large file from the document system and saved it to my desktop as suggested - and it does load far quicker. However, does that mean the transfer rate is slow, or does AutoCAD have a problem with some document systems? I still don't know! Thanks again for your time (and knowledge). Derek

Something is clogging up your connection: remote IT support is not my specialty, but your in-=house test with local files should help an IT specialist at your location plan for a solution.

The program isn't that smart: wouldn't hurt if your IT specialist did some testing to see if the program is spending too much time looking for dead links or missing content too, that can slow down the program.

Thanks Dean. I've passed your comments on to our IT department.......but like most IT departments, I won't hold my breath!

If I do get a result, I'll post it back here.
