new server blues....

if this is the wrong group please advise...

we are stepping up to a real server, windows server 3003 on a hp half rack
setup... lot's of bells and whistles.... but... i am running into some
isues... with ldd and thought i should ask in here...

we are going from a peer to peer work group setup to an actual domain
setup.. here is my procedure- please critique..

-----------------------------
CPU update procedure...

1- Rename the CPU through my computer... to the proper name from the
list-reboot

2- In my computer, change the domain to "xxxxxx"-reboot

3- Logon as "administrator" "xxxxxxx" use manage to add "xxxxxxx" to power
users (?)-reboot

4- At this point you need to wait for the system to find the domain... ( a
ctrl-alt-del may be needed to get out of the wait)-reboot

5- Logon with new users name and "xxxxxxxx" as password (this forces a
request for a new password, change as needed)-reboot

6- Logon as user, restore previous exported settings located on c-drive.
(used the file and setting transfer utility under system accesories...)

Having problems with getting ldd to work after resetting system. perhaps a
complete reinstall is in order? I can see where blank setups can be
preferable.

if i reload the ldd and civil menu's it seems to work now but i ma still not
trusting of the setup yet.

and last... i previously had the shared storage drive mapped as the "z"
drive on everyones cpu... so all the data paths and xrefs were consistent.
in this transition i have to remap the shared drive as "h"... so now alot of
my image and xref files will not load... what can i do to fix this...?

Hey Jesse,

I just did this in April. Oh the fun.

Are the clients Win XP? If so you should be able to change the PC name &
join the domain all in one shot. Right-click on My Computer, select
Properties and go to the Computer name tab. If you use the Network ID button
I think it will also automatically create a domain use as well. Just log on
to the client as admin first. All of this with only one reboot (I think). I
think this also works in Win 2K.

i though so... i was just making it harder than it needed to be- we are also
uisng active directory... not sure what that really entails...

any thought's on the ldd reload issue's or the xref path remapping?

If you are going from a single seat license to a network license I am pretty
sure you must do a complete uninstall & then a reinstall.

The xref's will be an issue if the xrefs reside in a different folder than
the source dwg. I think I recall seeing a lisp routine floating around here
or the C3D NG that would batch-remap the xrefs. Start searching because that
would save a lot of aspirin.

As far as the Active Directory goes, I am using it with very little
knowledge of it. I just setup all of my users in there.

A couple of other things to make your life easier. Keep the admin & user
passwords the same on server & client.
If you use a network install this will help for updating.

I called someone for help with a malfunction I can recall.

what was the result of your call? i don't recall if it ever lead to a
resolution... while we do still have the same reseller... i have allways
found i get much better info in here. so i don't normally have to resort to
calling them.
