Xrefing files on two computers through dropbox

I have set up an autocad file (including xrefs) on a dropbox account to be used by two different computers.

The files can be accessed by both computers but when I enter the file on the second computer, the xref links cannot be found. When I try to reattach the files, it says the file has already been overlaid and to reload the file. When I reload, it says there is no file?  This then leads me to reattaching the file from scratch, but I cannot do this as I have spent quite some time freezing certain viewport layers of the xref on the first computer.

Is there a way for the xref files to link up through dropbox?

Or, if not, how can I reattach the xref to keep the frozen layers?

Thanks

Marie Claire,

Welcome to the Forums!

Have you tried Autodesk's A360 Cloud Storage? It works seamlessly with AutoCAD and it's free up to 5GB:

As Dave has said, try using the cloud. However, if you don't want to do that, can you please provide a bit more info. Are you using an office server or something similar? Have you actually tried detaching and re-attaching your xrefs, just to see if it solves the problem?

And what is the purpose of these drawings, are you trying to make it possible for someone else to work on them from your second computer, or are you trying to send the drawing to someone external? My company policy is to eTransmit our drawings. This creates a new copy of the drawing and all the linked xrefs, so any modifications you make to the original files won't affect the eTransmit files.

I think the issue is the use of DropBox. It is not designed to be used like this. I've heard other people having similar issues with XREFs and "live" files on DropBox.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Community!

I have heard that other users have had issues using DropBox for xref files also. I believe that if you logon using the same account then that might solve the issue. Otherwise, make sure that you check that the path is set to the local synced folder and not the cloud itself.  Please let me know if this resolves any of the issue.
