XREF LAYERS

I have been using Autocad for many years , but until recently have never had to use xref's. What I am trying to display in the finished assembly is just a layer showing the xrefed major assembly, but all layers of all sub assemblies show up. I have attached simple PDF showing what I am trying to do. If anyone can help, that would be great. THe end product will have a lot of xref items and I would like to turn off each major system at one time as needed.

LAYER command and only select the layers you want to show not an option? From there you can build a Layer Filter to tap when needed.

One of the gentlemen at another plant we have, gave me the same suggestion. In the sub xref, apply filters and groups to items.

Thank you for your reply. I'll let you know how it turns out.
