Xref is invalid

I use xref's a lot and lately it seems I keep getting the error message *invalid*. The only way I have found (unless of course there is an option to change this) is to close the drawing, reopen and then xref it in again.

Any other options to not deal with this annoying feature?

HI @paulhenricarvalho,

When do you see the invalid message? Can you take a screen capture and attach it to a post?

Where are your XREF files located? are they on a network or in a cloud-sync folder?

Which version of AutoCAD are you using?  Can you attach some sample files that exhibit this problem?  Please also try running AUDIT and/or RECOVER/RECOVERALL on your files to check for corruption.

Hi,

When exactly do you get that message?

Is that XRef saved with absolute, relative or no path?

I get this message when I do an xref function. Next time it happens I'll take a screenshot and post it to this thread.

Files are located within job folders on Dropbox which is where I store my work and work from.  I used to work off external hard-drives but had a really bad crash and lost thousands of files so started using Dropbox to keep my work. AutoCad 2018

Hi @paulhenricarvalho,

The paths may not get respected with DropBox.  Can you try moving the files to a local non-sync location?  IF it works there, you can perhaps create a little script to copy the contents to your DropBox folder.

the thing is it doesn't happen all the time and if I close the file being xrefed into and reopen it, no problem.  I guess I'm still looking for the perfect way to store my files where I can access from two locations without having to carry the external HD around with me.

Hi @paulhenricarvalho,

I work on all my files on the C: or 😧 drive - both are local volumes.  When I am done editing the, I then COPY the changed files to my Sync folder of choice such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.

This not only lets me store the files on the cloud but ensures that I have a copy locally in case the cloud copy is inaccessible or damaged.

I believe I saw a reply that mentioned an AutoCad function or setting to eliminate this issue but can't seem to find it now.

Anyone know what I am getting at here?
