Window Selection Broken

I see many online posts about window selection not working.  I use AutoCAD extensively and window selection quit working recently, although AutoCAD 2017 has been installed for over a year and it was working fine.

What changed?

The standard comments about Options/Section/Implied Windowing, etc., do nothing to solve this problem.

I've been using AutoCAD since 1987.  The loss of window selection has made my productivity go right down the dumper (not to mention my sanity).

Something so basic should never happen.

Hi,

>> I see many online posts about window selection not working.

Please show links to these posts ... and please let us know what means "not working". What exactly are you doing and how is AutoCAD reacting to that?

And along with what @Alfred.NESWADBA asked - what happens if you type "W" at the "Select Objects" prompt?

You type in something like "Window Select not working in AutoCAD" and there they are.

Window selection is self explanatory.  Not much to say.  Click and drag from LL to UR with no command active.

Or enter a command and the "w" at the select objects prompt and do the click and drag.

Either way, it either sometimes works.  Sometimes selects some objects and ignores others.  Sometimes ignores everything.

Here's one I just did now.  Drew a circle next to a pointcloud object.  Immediately trying to window select it by implicit and explicit methods mentioned above.  The circle will not select.  Crossing works fine.  See attached.

Hi,

I might search for such threads, but even then don't know if a description there is the same as you have.

Never had that, and can't remember to ever have read about that.

>> Click and drag from LL to UR with no command active

Click and drag would open lasso selection, not window selection (with default settings).

It might be that just the selection preview is off. What happens when you try to click the circle direct, without window or cross selection?

Also maybe important: does that always happen when you have a pointcloud in the drawing?

When you say "windows" selection is not working, does "crossing" selection work then?

tomato, tomahto

Here's a simple search.

http://www.bing.com/search?q=window%20selection%20not%20working%20autocad&FORM=SNYBLB&PC=MASA&QS=n

I've been doing the same thing a million times and now it doesn't work.

I'll just keep working and record situations were it happens, then you can see it for yourself.

It may be a pointcloud only thing, but I seem to recall it happening in other circumstances w/o PC's.

We'll see....

Hi,

Sorry, I'm out, I don't want to go through 45.000.000 posts to maybe find the issue you have.

Okay, I had it happen again and here is exactly what is going on.

Simple, new CAD drawing.  No point clouds involved at all.  I have a quad viewport layout with Top, Front, Left, Ortho.  In Top (upper left) I drew a handful of construction lines.  Command: Move, Select Objects: W and I window around a rectangle made of three lines.  Nothing selects.  Okay?  Here we go again.

I was setting up a screen video capture to show ya'll that it happens and I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary.

I changed the lower left viewport from Left to Top so it would be over the command line area so you could see what I was typing and what happens in a small, succinct video clip.

BUT....

I did the same Move, W, draw selection, and it selects the objects just fine!  Try it again in the original Top viewport in the upper left, does not select.  Do it again in the Top viewport below that.  Works fine.

So the issue is viewport specific.  Both are wireframe.  Either it is a bug (I doubt it) or there is a viewport specific system variable making it not work in one  and works normally in the other.

My screen cap software crapped out, so I don't have a clip to show, but this is straight forward and just as I described.

Anyone know of a system variable that might account for this?

I think at this point everyone is going to tell you to "Reset to Default" and see if that helps

I've never seen this happen in my 20 years working with Autocad

I looked through a bunch of search results and none are what you are talking about. All the other people with that problem have it all the time and yours seems to be only sometimes.

Can I see a pic of your options>selection tab so I can see what your settings are. Maybe change mine to match to see if I can reproduce. Could you also share that drawing that you said you made to test it, so I can see if I can reproduce the issue there.

Is it possible your mouse button is not working correctly? If the button switch was sometimes registering an extra click it would unselect the line instantly. The video is so fast I can't really tell if that happens.

Hi!

Just did and it seems to have fixed it !

I read in the readme update file...

Général

  • La sélection d'objet se termine lorsque le curseur bouge encore.

Have you installed all updates?  If yes; perhaps try going back to default settings.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread here, but for anyone who finds this comment and is experiencing this same issue, I think I know a possible cause.

I had the same issue, where I would create a selection window, and it would stay black and white and not show the blue or green fill in the selection window. When I clicked to selected, nothing would be selected.

Selecting by clicking on an item worked.

What I think is the cause, at least in my case.

I have an OLE Object underlay underneath my geometry. It is hidden though.

The selection window works fine outside of that underlay area, but does not work on top of it, even when hidden.
