viewport in model space?

Any help gladly received.....

I have a viewport that is only visible as a black rectangle within model space. I have created an empty layer and made it current and then turned of all other layers and yet the viewport is still clearly visible. If i move into paper space the viewport disapears. In model space i cannot 'click' onto the boundary of the viewport. How do i delete the offending item?
