Various display glitches with pointclouds

Hello,

I'm experiencing different display glitches with pointclouds.

1) when zooming/panning, frequently a small part of the point cloud will keep appearing where it's not supposed to be. See https://youtu.be/UIpjhMYODTk. Notice how some points are appearing out of nowhere. This is NOT a registration issue !

2) I like to orbit frequently around the pointcloud, it helps with visualizing and understanding small details. I've set auto-target to off so that I can "snap" the orbit pivot point to the location I want to orbit around, but the pointcloud keeps appearing and disappearing. See https://youtu.be/dmtPDRhj9_g.

Notice how the UCS is jittering around. The closer I zoom, the more likely it is to happen. I also have some objects in the drawing, when I delete them completely the glitch doesn't happen anymore.

3) in intensity mode, points with a very high intensity show as RVB colors, despite the max intensity set to 100 in the point cloud color map dialog box (can't set it higher !). My guess is that those points are given an intensity higher than 100, which shouldn't be the case. See attached pictures. I don't have this issue in Recap.

As for my specs, I'm using AutoCAD 2017 SP1, Windows 8.1, core i7-4790 3.60Ghz, Quadro K4200 with recommended drivers and 16 Go RAM. I tried disabling all options in the hardware acceleration settings to no avail.

Anyone else with these issues ?

..I checked in Recap by turning the scans 067 and 068 on and off. They seemed to be in the right place.

With other words:
Turning on only position 067 shows the points in ReCap at another position than AutoCAD?

In that case I guess you  should open a support case at Autodesk and send them the data so they can take a look into it. I think we can not solve that issue here without having access to the data.

BTW: which scanner did you use?

I am mainly using Faro M70 scanner and this particular point cloud was shot by M70 and registered in Recap.

I have seen the same thing in point clouds measured with Trimble TX8, registered in Trimble Realworks,and exported as e57 (keeping individual scans) to Recap.

Why has the thread been split in two parts ? This thread is the continuation of this one in the AutoCAD forum. Can a mod stitch them back together ? Thanks.

To add on the conversation : Mika an I seem to have the exact same problem. This seems to be an AutoCAD-only issue as the point cloud always looked fine in Recap for me, and I've seen it happen on every project.

I'm also using a Faro (X130), the data was registered in Scene and imported into Recap (lsproj import).

Looking forward to see this issue resolved.

I suspect the problem is somewhere in the interwork between Autocad and the graphics card.

We have seen the same problem on all our three computers. Their hw configurations are different but all have some version of Nvidia Geforce GTX card.

Did a soulution to this ever get created? I have the same problem and now I am using AutoCAD 2021 from 2018. The problems are exactly the same.

Not that I know of. Open a case with support and show them this thread, that's about all we can do.

A work-around that works for me. 

Start a new drawing and bring the point cloud in on the same coordinates as your original drawing. 

In your original drawing, switch off the point cloud layer. Overkill all line work and purge the drawing. Copy all your linework, symbols, text, etc and convert to a block. Copy and Paste (pasteorig) your block into the new drawing, the point cloud should zoom and pan without a problem, or until the problem happens again that is. 

I appreciate it doesn't solve your problem, but it's a work-around that I use.

2025 and this is still going on. The only work-around I've found that sticks is to use Perspective rather than Parellell view mode. A little more clunky to pan around, but it stops the point cloud jumping around. I wonder if this is an issue with rendering orthographic views?
