variables in xref paths?

I have a file reference saved path that looks like PW_WORKDIR:d0204779\x-001-curve widening 03-03-2013.dwg

i have never seen a NAME:folder\folder\drawing.dwg before. I have seen ellipsis and backslashes - normal stuff for relative paths.

how do i figure out what PW_WORKDIR: points to? I have nothing like that on my computer or network.

PW_Workdir come frome ProjectWise

From Userposting:
"You can attach reference files (in the new version) as
PW_WORKDIR:dms000xx\name.dgn and if that file has already been copied out
all of the set logic will still happen like you would want it to happen, and
you'd still be working nicely with Projectwise. The PW_WORKDIR config
variable is a new addition to our integration that is really just a
shorthand for your working directory base. "
