Units settings within DXF files

DXF files contain 2 variables to set the units - $INSUNITS and $MEASUREMENT.

Do these variables go hand in hand or is one set vs. the other?  I have DXF examples that have $INSUNITS set but the $MEASUREMENT is not set accordingly.

For my own knowledge, when was the units settings implemented in DXF?  (I was told it was not always there)

Hi and Welcome to AutoCAD Forum,

MEASUREMENT : Controls whether the current drawing uses imperial or metric hatch pattern and linetype files.

INSUNITS           : Specifies a drawing-units value for automatic scaling of blocks, images, or xrefs when inserted or attached to a drawing.

from that it's clear that they work on their own specific cad elements .
