Super sized plots

It has been over twenty years since I have felt this much like a newbie.

I have a client that, for whatever reason, wants a pdf that is larger than what Adobe will let me create. The page size is over twenty feet in either direction which I know can not be physically recreated without tiling or stripes. They are adamant that they can create any size page they want; but I keep getting an AutoCAD error that states something along the lines of "the output is too large for the media". I am never going to print this on paper, it will only ever be a digital file. When I ask, they are using Adobe and do not understand why I can't get them what they want. I'm not sure if they are some sort of wizard or have some other software they don't know about, but I am banging my head on my desk, and we all know how "productive" that is.

The internet says Adobe has a physical limitation of something like 16 (sixteen) feet, so I get it, but how in the name of all that is AutoCAD, can they create something bigger than that?

Is there a solution that will allow me to create an image that is massive in size. I don't care what type of file, I just can not send the cad file to this person. Every search tells me the same thing. "no bigger than 'X' feet" all of which are smaller than what I need.

I know I can change the scale, send it in several sheets, print it half sized, and probably many other work-arounds, but that isn't the question. Why can't I create a digital image that is any dimension by any dimension? or is the answer just, "AutoCAD will not do that, move on with your life"?

You found the answers and solutions already: sorry, that's all there is.

Contact a local banner maker or professional grade print-shop in your area and inquire about how they actually create billboard sized prints, especially if you only use AutoCAD, it's going to be a fascinating discovery.

• DWG To PDF.pc3 will not plot greater than 200 inches (5080 mm) from AutoCAD

         Solution:
         To workaround this limitation, plot to DWF instead of PDF.

They did it with hand drawings, it should be possible.

The company that creates physical sets of our jobs was the first call I made after banging my head a bit. They confirmed the limit of 200 (two hundred) inches for a PDF. 

I get it, a 36 (thirty six) inch wide 16 (sixteen) foot long piece of paper is unwieldy. But there have been times when we needed sheets much longer than that. (we just taped them together)

 This was the exact image I had in mind when the client asked us to create this massive monstrosity. Which is why I had that sinking "newbie" feeling like I was missing a super simple answer. I was sure if they needed this in the 1950's, surely CAD could do everything they did, just faster with the ability for more repetition.

While that is one of the work-arounds, it still does not allow me to send the client their desired filet type, ".pdf"

AutoCAD has a way of disappointing us with the simplest of items, we have a love/hate relationship. I have almost 25 (twenty-five) years worth of .lisp routines that do things that AutoCAD should do that someone else had to fix. 

But I guess I have issues because I chose this as a profession.
