Stop screen regen in AutoCAD 2018

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi

I have some drawings with a lot, up to 15 Xrefs connected with each other.

when I'm Zooming i always get  to a point where autocad starts regen.

Is there a way to stop autocad 2018 to do  this autonmatc regen? (this causes a delay from 30sec. very annoying)

I tried Regenauto, Viewres, Expert.... none of this stops Autocad from automatic regen.

Is there a setting to force autocad to do regen just by entering the command?

Hi,

From the help >>>here<<<:

Obsolete
The REGENAUTO command has been removed from the product.

So the last chance might be REGENMODE (but I think that is just avoiding REGEN for commands, not when zooming (not sure about that).

Just to make sure: have you already played with the settings in _GRAPHICSCONFIG? (especially the "high quality geometry..." and "smooth...")

Which is the preferred visual style you are working with? Maybe it's better to work with style "Wireframe" instead of "2D Wireframe" or vice versa ... which one performs better depends on your geometry and your graphic card.

Regenmode is  on 0,

so this is not affecting the regen behavior while zooming

expresstools: REGENMODE

The REGENAUTO command also controls this setting (not available in AutoCAD LT)

so this setting is just for LT

I try playing with the _GRAPHICSCONFIG settings,

disabling all the settings changes the Display, but it don't affect regen while zooming

Wireframe.JPG

This the Display in Wireframe    no Grips at this zomm and the graphical display of the lines .....aaaaaaarrrghhhh.

I think Wireframe Mode its no solution in this case.

The same zoom in 2D Wireframe,2D Wireframe.JPG

the Solids are gone, but the line display and grips are correct!

never the less this settings also don't affect regen while zooming ;-(((((

the drawings have very little divergences (0.000xxx) so i really have to zoom in, so every time I´m zooming in a little to far i wait for zooming in and then again for zooming out.......

Hi @Anonymous,

Please prepare a NFO file for me to investigate. I suspect this issue is more related to the graphics card and driver than with the drawing files.

Please also attach a screen capture of the GRAPHICSCONFIG window.

I doubt it.  The extent to which it can Zoom in and out without Regenerating is determined by its generation of a "virtual screen" of graphic information, within which it can move around [not just Zooming, but also Panning].  If you go past the point where it can use that set of information, it has to Regenerate in order to have the appropriate information available to display -- it simply doesn't know enough to show what you've asked for, until it Regenerates.  [I don't think the version you're using makes any difference to that.]

Way back, up until somewhere in the mid- to late-1980's, it Regenerated on every Zoom or Pan.  The "virtual screen" approach is what made "transparent Zoom/Pan" possible, and saved us all a lot of waiting time, but there is still a limit on the extent of that virtual screen.

Q: is the screen perhaps just going blank then your items reappear, and you are calling that symptom "regen"? Would a better descirption be your screen is "flashing" or blinking on and off as you zoom?

What is your Windows OS?
What is your video card?

I know this behavior, in "earlier" versions, you could just zoom until you reached the limit of this "virtual screen",

then you had to enter regen to zoom in to another "level", and then again.....

now its not possible anymore...  i can not stay at the level if I´m zooming a tick too long --> regen.

zooming = scrolling mmb

its a very long "flash" with 30seconds waiting time... there are some "flashes" with about 10sec.. , but

no its a regen --> commandline

Is suspect it's your video card not keeping up, I don't see any regens with MMB-zoom actions here at all in R2018.

is hardware acceleration on? Are LINEFADING and LINESMOOTHING variables on too? Turn off the latter two then the fomer and see if things calm down with MMB-zoom actions.

Thank You Dean!

I have tested the settings again, and your right!

disabling smoothing, fading and turning off hardware acceleration, makes me possible to MMB-zoom without delay.

I also have to say that I unloaded all xrefs, and lowered the Viewres to 10, closed Autocad and opened the file again.

So i would say its a graphic-card issue.

Hi @Anonymous,

I am glad this is working. If you want to send me your OS and graphics card info I can help check for a new driver that might let you enable some of these features again. You can also send me an NFO file which contains this info too.

<Regenmode> was the eureka moment for me.  I'm working with a drawing with several paper space layouts each with 9 model spaces.  Making changes in each would be horrendous as the automatic regen would last up to 60 secs each time.  Thank you!!!!

I'm having this issue also in AutoCAD Lt 2019. REGENMODE at 0 doesn't fix problem. Any solutions?

I think this ends up happening because AutoCAD is still a 32 bit program. Come on Autodesk its 2020. Can we get a true 64 bit version of AutoCAD. 64 bit is not going away.

... or you could just realistically do what others suggest in this post and elsewhere for a real fix vs some pie-in-the-sky magical theory you have 🙂
