So you cant snap a solid to solid`s vertex??

I am pretty sure you don't talk about SOLIDs, because there isn't a problem.

Do you mean HATCHs? For Hatch it is right, you need another object on this position to do this stupid move.

 

Please use the gripmenu to delete the vertex (if you want this).

4. Specify the starting point, then specify the end point.

Ok,

no Solids, no hatchs with solid pattern, we talk about 3Dsolids now.

 

I am not sure why it isn't working (but your settings are a bit crazy = too much snapoption ON),

why is your SNAPMODE on?

 

Try it in a standard autocad profile with a new drawing and new cylinders.

 

If you like, share your dwg and your profil(options/profile/export)

Are you referring to vertex the same as OSNAP positions?

 

It appears that you are only using the "Gizmo" to adjust position of your cylinder.  This is a handy tool but maybe not for what you need this time?

The Gizmo appears at the center of mass for the solid/s you have selected.  If you were to select more than one of them you would see the Gizmo appear at a location between the two.  Moving from center mass may or may not be your intended base location?  More often, the top or bottom center might be more significant as a base location.  Other instances might require a top or bottom quadrant.

The axis pointers on the Gizmo allow movement in the locked direction.  You may be able to choose an OSNAP point to assist but your result might not be as expected.

It isn't clear where you intended to place your cylinder so I'm not sure what result you wanted?

 

The Gizmo has other cool uses too so look into that >here< when you have time!

 

BTW... I noticed that you had almost every possible OSNAP choice turned on.  I might suggest that you narrow your running OSNAP choices to a set that accommodates most work and override with shift-right-click as necessary.

I use endpoint, midpoint, intersection, center, quadrant, and extension and leave all others unchecked.  As needed I will use shift-right-click when a different OSNAP point selection is needed.  Not trying to sell you on those but only offer an example.

I also found that you are in Perspective view for your 3D environment.  I always recommend my students work in Parallel view and only use perspective for display and presentation.

 

To switch you can simply right-click the viewcube and select parallel.

 

This often triggers better visibility while working.  I noticed that the white indicators were appearing which were likely traces of the center OSNAP points for top and bottom of the middle cylinder.  They may not be displaying correctly due to perspective or due to too many OSNAP choices.

So its a called a quadrant, not a vertex. *facepalm* Thats kinda stupid given that you can select a vertex in a solid manually.

Im a pro max user, I just expected a bit more logical approach here. Thanks all of you anyway!

I can see you`re snapping to the center point, which also does work on my side, but can you pull this off with an arbitrary vertex on a solid?

Realize that we do not work with arbitrary in CAD.  Everything has definition and mathematically driven data, hence Raster graphics (images) vs. Vector graphics (CAD).

 

I saw a few posts in this chain which inform you how to connect the center of one cylinder to center of the other or quadrant of another.  The OSNAPs aid in this connectivity.  If you keep only a select number of running OSNAPs turned on you can use the shift-right-click to select "nearest" as your destination point.  This would permit you to move the 1st by means of a quandrant or center start position to a position around the top or bottom of the second object.  There is no provision for along the rounded surface vertically in this method.

If you would like to locate along the rounded face vertically you can use quadrant or center of first and touch but do not click a quadrant of the 2nd.  Instead you will touch and track vertically from the quadrant and type a value in to express a distance from the tracked location.

 

This is as arbitrary as AutoCAD gets.  I hope it gets close to what you initially wanted.

I think part of the confusion here is that as a Max user you may be confusing the Max Pivot Point with the AutoCAD "center of mass" gizmo (it's really a centroid).   Object snaps in Max have a pivot point option. I am not aware of a gizmo snap in AutoCAD. To do the the move you want to do use the center snap for the move.
