Let's have 2 lines on top of each other. Top view. The first one is at Z = 0, the second one is at Z <> 0. The second one is newer, so laying on the top - but it does not matter.

Any chance I could somehow OSNAP the one at Z <> 0 (eg. using ENDP snap mode) without need to change a view?

 

I was playing about this for some time... it looks like that if both lines are at Z <> 0 than it will take the Z closer to 0.

definitely you need to change the view in order to make the two points visible. Take advantage of UCS features

Yes it could be .. , to force AutoCAD osnap to catch Endp for a line with z value you have to :

  • change ELEVATION (System Variable) to the Z value that you're working on . 
  • check and select the   Replace Z value with current elevation  option from OPTIONS >> Drafting tab >> Object snap options . 
  • Now ... all of your osnap environment will be on that level value stores in elevation system variable .

Thank you guys for suggestions -- that lead me to find the suitable solution.

 

The thing is that I am fixing the survey. Some of the linework or labeles are flatten underneath (Z=0), some are at real evelations. I want to fix some elements by taking the Z from the surrounding objects. I din't wanted to twist the view every now and then for every single element... but I figured that I could simply lift the view to the Z elevation that is just closer to the real heights that to 0. Then it OSNAPs to the real Z rather than to 0 underneath.

No need to do that. Split your modelspace to two viewports (command _VIEWPORTS and then select e.g. "Two: Vertical").

Then in the left view you have the top view, activate the right view and change it to a 3d-view.

 

Now you can select in the top view with crossing your double (or multiple) overlaying objects, these will get then grips displayed ... on the right view you see the gripped entities and so  also their Z-value.

 

Is that something useful for your work?

Thank you Alfred for your suggestion.

I know the feature. The issue is that in my case is dZ about 100times bigger than x or y dimension. So it's not very effective to do all the zooming to grab the grip from z=0 to z=500...

I like the trick with elevating the xy plane... that's feasible.

 

BTW lately I was exploring the *new* flexible frames when working with 2 or more viewports. You could adjust the size as you need just by dragging the edge... nice. And when you move the edge over the side to close one of those viewports... Surprise! you'll never know which one stays current and which one will close!
