Shift key will not toggle ortho mode

I cannot get the shift key to toggle ortho mode. I have turn on and off temp overrides and it still didn't work. I've seen this problem a couple places with no solution. Can this be fixed? Am I missing something?

Yes! Did you find a solution? It drives me mad. It is really not acceptable that the modst basic workflow doesn't work after x years and a two key solution should be found to fix something that is just wrong.

unfortunately the overrides-fix doesn't work for me...(yes, I did restart). I also do not see an "ioption" as some suggested.

Are you on a laptop, or desktop?

wireless keyboard or wired?

Are you aware there is a 1+second delay before that comes on so you have to wait for it?

AutoCAD2021 is an old program today in December2024: what changed with your setup or PC when it broke or stopped working? Something did, can you find out and share?

It stopped working after Autocad would crash and had to be reset. I am now
using 2024 and it works fine now.

Autocad programs are not shareable. There is a command inside the program
that toggles using the Shift key is: Command-tempoverrides. 0 is off and 1
is on

I am sorry then I cannot help you. Perhaps you can open a support case with Autocad direct. They are very responsive to this. It could also be your mouse or keyboard. Often F keys have many different uses.

try entering TEMPOVERIDES into the command line and if it is set to (0) change it to (1).

this fixed mine.

The same happens to me, it used to work perfectly until it suddenly didn't anymore, and I'll use it the same way as you mention. I'm using autocad 2024 in a lenovo legion laptop. What is bizarre is that it used to work just fine, and I can't get it to connect it back in the settings part.

This Tempoverrides command worked perfectly! changed it from 0 to 1. Don't know if it changed anything else but now the shift key is working! Thanks!

What I tried;

"tempoverides to 1" did not work
Resetting the settings did not work
Reinstalling windows did not work
Turning off windows hotkeys didn't work
turning off keyboard shortcuts in accessibility options didn't work
There is no option called SHIFT + LEFT CLICK IMAGE under options in autocad.
Changing the keyboard shortcut in cui directly did not work

My computer is monster abra a7 v14.6, I use autocad 2025 on windows 11. Before this, the "shift" key was working when I was using AutoCAD 2023 on a Dell computer in Windows 10 (note: I installed AutoCAD 2023 on my new computer, but it did not work)

The method that works for me

There are 2 "toogle ortho" methods in the keyboard shortcut. In the cui settings, copy the "macro" of one of them then delete them both. Then paste the code you copied into another keyboard shortcut you don't use. Set the keyboard shortcut to "shift+<".

Apply the changes and close the "cui" menu.

IMPORTANT! When you try "shift+<" you have to hold it down for a while. After 1 second the ortho mode changes. When you release "shift+<" it returns to its previous state without waiting.

the macro:

^P'_.orthomode $M=$(if,$(and,$(getvar,orthomode),1),$(-,$(getvar,orthomode),1),$(+,$(getvar,orthomode),1))

I am just having this issue in the last week. I tried changing TEMPOVERRIDES and even tried changing settings in the CUI. Could it be something else? It is not file specific either but I have attached a file for you to check out.

Great idea, but not my answer. Last KB update from Microsoft was a year ago. Here is a list of recent updates. I'm not sure I want to mess with any other Microsoft updates.

Unfortunately I ran into this problem too in the last few days... Using AutoCAD 2024 the shift key would not work as expected. In AutoCAD 2027 there did not seem to be a problem.

The solution for me was to change some windows settings regarding the Filter keys options.

I used the steps for 'The Filter Key settings workaround' from this Autodesk article.

Check the Filter Key settings workaround
Try this workaround if unable to roll back KB5086672.

  1. Reboot the computer.
  2. In Windows, navigate to the Keyboard settings in Accessibility > Keyboard.
  3. Turn Filter Keys ON.

  4. Click the arrow next to the toggle to adjust the individual Filter Key settings as follows:
    1. Turn OFF Keyboard shortcut for Filter Keys.
    2. Turn OFF Show the Filter Keys icon on the task bar.
    3. Turn OFF Beep when keys are pressed or accepted.
    4. Turn ON Ignore repeated keystrokes.

[edit]

One really annoying effect from the filter keys settings is that repeated keystrokes (for instance, deleting lots of letters in a  typed line) becomes painfully slow. So this is a workaround for using the shift key in AutoCAD again, but not convenient for other programs.

[another edit a few days later]

With the filter keys 'ON', every time when I start my PC, the keyboard does not respond. I have to use the mouse to go to settings and turn the Ignore repeated keystrokes 'OFF' and then 'ON' again to get the keyboard to respond again.

So this workaround is not really convenient...
