Send to back/front not working

Hello,

I'm using AutoCAD 2013. I'm trying to overlap some columns (3D) in specific order. I've tried drawing them in the order I want them to overlap and it didn't work. So then I tried playing around with the shadows options for 3D (e.g. cast/receive shadows). That also failed. Lastly I tried working with the bring to front send to back which also didn't work.

By didn't work I mean the columns go back to their original positions after zooming in/out, or opening/closing the file. I've tried changing the various settings suggested but nothing seems to work.

Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?

Thanks,

Could you post a few screenshots of this problem?

DRAWORDER command is a 2D function: is that what you are using or trying to use?

If you look at the column on the bottom right corner you can see what I mean. This happens by zooming in/out etc.

3D columns overlapping. Does this mean you have them one on top of another?

If I understand you correctly, you should arrange them in sequence along the Z axis (or parallel axis to your sort) and not place them on top of one another.

If I am not following you correctly, further explanation of what you are trying to accomplish may be needed for us to give you a proper solution.

Draworder doesn't work that well, try the Express, DrawOrder by color.

No the columns are on the same plane, their edgres cross each other. They need to be in a specific order to represent the construction sequence:

1- green on top of everything

2- pink on top of yellow and blue

3- blue on top of yellow

I don't understand what you mean by arranging them in sequence along the Z axis.

Thanks

What a cool trick! it works for everything except that it won't bring pink under green (see photo). I tried using the command to bring it on top of yellow and blue but when I zoom out, it goes under everything 😞

Is it True color or Index color ?

Try erase that one, draw a new one and see if it do any better.

I'm just using the "shaded" setting for the view.

P.s. I tried drawing other columns beside these ones but still the same issue. Things change when I zoom in/out.

Draworder disregards the the Z value of the object if the Visualstyle is 2D Wireframe. To fill a shape with a color while in 2D Wirframe mode you will need to give it a hatch pattern.   ~Lee

Hello, thanks for the response. My drawing is in 3D, how do you suggest that I demonstrate the order of the columns if I can't use drawing order? Is there a way?

To clarify, by "order of the columns" you do not mean their Z order bu the order in which they are constructed which has nothing to do with their 3D location.

A quick solution that comes to mind is to create a second model that fusges the "Z" location.  To do this I would:

1. Make a copy of your file.

2. Change the view to the orientation you want for the final image.  I think using a parallel projection would work best.

3. Change the UCS so that the XY plane is parallel to the scren (UCS, V).

4. Now move the objects in the current orientation in the Z direstion such that their Z value places them in the appropriate sequence.

With this approach you can still use the Shaded Visualstyle. This isn't elegant but it could work!
