Selected items are showing as dashed instead of highlighted

When selecting a line or object, it used to show as highlighted. Now when I select something it showing as dashed. I have tried the selectioneffect and preselectioneffect commands and have had no change. Is there a command prompt to change these back to only being highlighted?

Thank you

The GRAPHICCONFIG got turned off and it was put into Safemode. Not sure how that happened, but after a computer restart that fixed the issue. I had previously shut down AutoCAD and restarted and the problem persisted.

Thank you for your help.

The "dashed" effect is highlighting -- just a different form [the way it always was up until a few versions ago].  I assume you mean the "neon glow" highlighting.

SELECTIONEFFECT only shows that "glow" when set to 1 and  [from Help:] "When hardware acceleration is on."

#1  See Message 6.

#2  What is "text height visibility"?  And what is "dimension style open" as a setting for it?  Some different terminology [i.e. standard AutoCAD wording] would be helpful, or you may be able to illustrate the problem with an image or a sample drawing.

Did you even read the responses already posted? Try Message #6 above.
And why would you lose your work, do you never SAVE your files? or SAVEAS? Or QSAVE?

If it didn't change even after you set SELECTIONEFFECT to 1, you can use command GRAPHICSCONFIG and enable the "Hardware Acceleration" on.

It works for me after I enabled it, hope this info helps

Enter the OPTIONS command or choose it from the Application menu to open the Options dialog box. On the System tab, click the Graphics Performance button. Then click the Hardware Acceleration button to turn it on.

Your issue will be solved.

While turning hardware acceleration on does allow me to set SELECTIONEFFECT to 1 and get selected items to glow instead of dotted line, I now have lines all over the place. It looks like I'm trying to solve a very complicated murder mystery. Lines can't be selected or moved. Is there way to have hardware acceleration off and still get the SELECTIONEFFECT option to work as I would like?

Help even for 2023 still says the neon-glow effect is available only with hardware acceleration turned on.  Maybe a different graphics card / driver would do it....
