same text in model space appear different in separate files. running autocad 2018

I noticed an old file I was working on had really fuzzy, jagged edges texts in model space only (Paper space is smooth and fine). So I decided to open a clean file and paste the contents in. Shows up smooth and fine. Any reasons what could be causing this? I tried the 0 in Z elevation already, didn't fix anything.

Try entering SHADEMODE at command line and setting it to "2dwireframe" for smooth text.
