Rotating view / labels linked to SQL

Hi,

I'm using SQL to place down linked labels to various blocks, say a rectangle. This works fine and text is displayed within. Problem is when I then want to rotate the rectangle + rotate the label to fit inside; and when I update the label (adding new fields, or generally updating when the SQL database changes) the rotated label reverts back to default "un-rotated" - so that the text doesn't fit inside the rectangle anymore / it overlaps.

I could create a new label and have the angle rotated specifically, but then I will end up having a rather long list of various labels that's rotated with only a slight angle.

Thanks.

Hi @Jeanette_A,

I don't have a database to try this with but what happens in your drawing if you take an existing label and go into the properties to change the rotation angle. Then use Matchprop to select other labels that need the same rotation?

Does this work? You could perhaps even combine this action with a Qselect.

Hi @john.vellek,

If I alter the rotation of the label, that means that I'm rotating ALL the labels I've already placed.

I could create another label with 90 degrees rotation, but then I've got a some at 9degrees, 10, 11 and so on. All text need to be inside the block nicely, and I will end up with at least 50 labels + if I'm creating one for each.

Hi @Jeanette_A,

I think I understand what you are describing but to be sure, can you give me one or two sample screenshots? I will see if I can emulate this on my side to see if there is a way around this issue.

Thanks for your patience.

Hi @john.vellek,

I placed down attached labels on the desks below. Desk A is how I would like the information to be displayed. Desk B had the same rotation as Desk A when I linked it, but when I rotated it into position and updated the labels, the label rotated back to it's original position. Desk C is one out of at least 50 configurations of desks at a slight angle.

I've also tried rotating the view (not the desks) but when rotating back and updating; the labels revert.

I can create 90° labels etc but I will end up with too many labels to keep track on.

Thanks a lot for looking into this matter for me. It's much appreciated!!

HI @Jeanette_A,

I am going to try and tackle this issue this morning. Please clarify for me, is the name and the desk title pieces of text both labels that are connected to the database or just the name piece?

I want to make sure that I get the details before I muck this up. Thanks for your patience.

Not quite sure what you mean by "is the name and the desk title pieces of text both labels that are connected to the database or just the name piece?"

The text is extracted from my SQL database. I use the option "create attached labels" when connecting the text to the desk.

Hope this helps.

And thanks again for all your help!!

Hi @Jeanette_A,

I am sorry if I was unclear.

Is the text Desk A a label being applied from the database?

Is the text Jeannete... a label being applied also from the database?

I am asking as it appears that the Desk text might  be an attribute that is designed to auto-orient with the desk.

HI @Jeanette_A,

I played with this for quite a while today and I don't have a solution for you. I considered Annotative text which might be an option for easily adjusting the the overall text sizes but this might make the text too small for you to be useful. It might be a great way to have a viewport with scale get all the labels the same size

There are no options for auto-orientation or rotation other than the angles displayed in the drop down list for the label template.

So this means that once a label is updated, the rotation will go back to the original rotation selected in the template.

The only way I can think of managing this is to create a couple of action macros that would pause for user selection and then automatically put in a rotation angle property. So you could have one for 0 rotation and one for 90.

In all honesty, I consider this a product defect and will log it as such with development. There should at least be a Justification to fit for the text in the labels.

You might also Consider AutoCAD Map 3D which is much more robust in feature set with databases.

Thank you so much for your patience.
