Refedit command copying and attaching image to xref

I encountered a problem today with AutoCAD. I have a host drawing that has multiple xrefs attached to it individually (not nested xrefs) I also have a bunch of jpeg images attached to the drawing via the reference manager (they are not embedded images). When I invoke the "refedit" command and then close the "refedit" command saving the xref I was just editing, the images that are attached to the host drawing somehow copy themselves to the external reference I was just previously editing as an unreferenced entity. This causes the exact same image reference to exist on not only the host drawing, but the external reference. My host drawing has multiple autocad drawings referenced into it, but this problem only seems to happen with one of the xrefs and not the rest. I have tried to search for the problem online but I either cant find it or I cant describe it well enough in a few short characters. I cant be the only one experiencing this. Can anyone help?

ABOUT command lists what as your AutoCAD version?
your OS?

If the problem is one single XREF, then fix that file: close out of all files, then use RECOVER command to open the problematic DWG file, then PURGE and QSAVE. See if that helps.

OR... use XOPEN to open and edit the XREF outside of the top file and see if the issue goes away: remember to update the XREF (AutoCAD should prompt you to do so).

I am currently using autocad 2020.   I did what you mentioned to the problematic external reference  and tried using the xopen command and nothing changed. Cleared a couple of errors from the drawing however the problem persists.

Weird indeed. And you confirmed those image files are suddenly inside that one XREF with XOPEN command? Are you sure they were not already referenced in there, just not loaded?

you might actually need to run RECOVERALL command on the topmost file to ensure the problem is not somewhere else.

Do you have the 2020.1.3 update installed? It is required, ABOUT command will confirm what you are using.

I tried the recoverall option. I will check to see if I have the update installed.. Stay tuned!
