"Unsupported DGN file. Only V7 and V8 are supported" when trying to insert a DXF

Trying to insert a DXF file into a DWG template and get the following message: " You have selected an unsupported DGN file. Only V7 and V8 files are supported."

The DXF is coming from an outside company and has been generated from a 3D model (these are roof outlines). I expected to be able to insert the DXF just fine. I use the full version of AutoCAD 2018. 

When I attempted to attach the DXF on this thread, the Autodesk Forums webpage removed it, stating the attachment's "content type (application/x-dxf) does not match its file extension and has been removed". Many thanks for any assistance!

How are you trying to insert the dxf file?

If you zip up the dxf file you should be able to attach the zip file to the thread.

In CAD, I'm using Attach on the Insert tab of the ribbon. That's the only way I know how to insert the DXF file format. 

The DXF is quite small to begin with but I've zipped and attached to this thread. Thanks.

The Attach option on the insert tab of the ribbon is for doing underlays and that doesn't support dxf format files. If you run that command and look at the supported file extensions, you'll see that *.* is assumed to be dgn files, so when you pick a file with an extension that isn't specifically supported, the attach code assumes that it is a dgn file.

I don't have 2018 installed, so I can't test to see if the INSERT command will allow the dxf file extension or not, but the old command line -INSERT command does, and you can enter the ~ character when it prompts for a block name to bring up the file select dialog where you can set it to the dxf file extension and select your dxf file.

Drag and drop the DXF file from a folder on your PC into your open DWG file: watch the commandline to follow the INSERT command prompts that are automatically triggered.

No issues with your DXF file here: nice roof.
