I inhertited a file (Microstation). i am using my layers, and properties in Autocad 2015. even though i set my current layer, which has my property settings, I draw any object, line, etc, it has it's own properties, instead of the current layer props. How do i change settings to force new objects drawen to take on my porperties?

Try command SETBYLAYER, go to setting and pick your choice.

Then draw a line to see if it'll change.

Thanks for the suggestion. but i tried the setbylayer, saw that all choices were checked, drew a line...but the same results

Can you can attach part of the drawing , save down to 2007 autocad version?

So what have you done to ensure you are drawing bylayer? Other than looking at your layer settings, you have to do more. Are all these following variables set to BYLAYER? Probably not. These are on the Ribbon's HOME tab, Properties Panel, or you can type them:
CECOLOR
CELTYPE
CELWEIGHT
CETRANSPARENCY

the CE...commands seem to have worked. not sure how or why such an obscure setting works to that extent.

Nothing obscure about them my friend, you just needed a reminder of something you forgot about: these are your active drafting settings, just like the layer setting you limited yourself to looking at, they've been around for way long before you and I even knew AutoCAD existed as a product.
