Problem with a file exported from Arcgis

Hi

I have a problem with a file exported from Arcgis. I can open it, zoom in, cut parts,  and move around but when i try to process something my Autocad freeze. I had try to audit and purge but it also freeze.

I have tried using other AutoCAD version but still got the same problem. So far have tested in 2010, 2017 & 2018 Autocad Version.

I have cut the large file to a very small portion of the file and still have the same problem.

I'm submitting the sample file, hope someone can help me out to find out what is the problem and how to fix the larger file

My AutoCAD is working fine with all the others files, the problem is particularly with this file.

Best Regards

Jorge

Hi,

can you please attach the sample file, there is nothing attached.

In the meantime: before selecting an object turn off your property window ... does AutoCAD then freeze too?

Hi,

I have opened your DXF and I guess that DXF was not created by ArcGIS, it was created by FME, is that correct?

I would try to export the objects directly from ArcGIS to DXF and see if that works better.

If you do have Map3D or Civil3D you might also create a SHP from ArcGIS and use either command _MAPCONNECT or _MAPINSERT to get the SHP-dataset displayed/imported.

When I had opened the DXF I also see a lot of FME-blocks (just to present a line, which does not make that much sense), while selecting one of the block-insertions did not freeze my AutoCAD every command accessing the mass of block definitions really need a lot of time on my systems too.

Hi Alfred

Sorry for my late response. I'm out of city righ now and don't have much service in this area.

Yes they are form FME. I had tried to export directly from ARcGIS but didn't come as expected.

FME export was very good until you start to process the file.

Is yor machine very fast?? Do you think if a wait enough i can use the file already have?

I have and old MAP version, not remeber is MAP3D, I would give a try when i go back to my office. I'll post the news

Thank very much,

Jorge

Hi,

>> Is yor machine very fast?? Do you think if a wait enough i can use the file already have?

I don't know what you want to do with the data, so I can't answer this question.

What I see: loading the dwg-file needs a long time, then selecting one of the objects is fast.

If you don't need the block-definitions that exists as definitions but are not used as they are not inserted you can start command _PURGE and clean them out, then the file is just a few kB's in size ... but I guess you'll need these block definitions.

>> I have and old MAP version, not remeber is MAP3D

If you have AutoCAD Map then you have AutoCAD Map 3D ... there exists only that one product.

At least this gives you the option to import a SHP and convert the vectors to polylines, this drawing should be much more performant.

Hi Alfred

Thank for the help

I notice that block created by FMW was just a point with all the attributes, I need some of them specially the attributes. I was trying to replace  the existing blocks for just one and copying the attributes in order to eliminate the one block per item that FME create. I make a small lisp program to do this, but after a few replace Autocad fail and abort. Then i tried to cut de file in small parts and purge in order to reduce the size and memory needed but when i use the purge command Autocad stock ( no advance, no error no nothing just stop), i wonder if a leave all the night i may have the file purge and can proceed as i wanted.

Did you try to purge the file??

Best regards

Jorge

Just wait, there is a lot to purge.

>> Did you try to purge the file??

Yes, I did, that's why I wrote that the file size was reduced to a few kB's.

Hi Alfred

Thanks for your help.

I let the computer all night long and finnally i manage to purge and reduce the file to something more manageable.

Hi,

>> i have .gdb files, don't see any .shp file.

GDB is a proprietary format of ArcGIS, that can't be read or imported by Map3D.

You need to export the GIS data from ArcGIS in SHP format ... that can be imported.

HI Alfred

Thanks for your help again

I was in ESRI offcie and we export the file to dxf or .dwg ( don't remember) but i got differents layer with information in different coordinantes

so i didn't use them. Maybe we didn't pay attention to the proyection setting while we were doing the export process.

Right now, i'm using my server wich is very fast machine to process the file i exported from FME, and so far i'm getting good results.

I appreciate so much your help.

Thanks

Jorge
