PDF Import problem: map symbols appearing as text objects

Hi,

What do you make of this?

I am importing some PDFs into AutoCAD 2017. These PDFs were created from AutoCAD previously. When I import them, some of the map symbols appear as text objects, for example in the situation below the tree symbols in the PDF appear as capital 'L's when imported into AutoCAD:

In the PDF, there are tree symbolsIn the PDF, there are tree symbolsWhen imported into AutoCAD, the tree symbols become text objects containing capital 'L'sWhen imported into AutoCAD, the tree symbols become text objects containing capital 'L's

Is there a setting / variable in AutoCAD that I should be changing? Or is this more to do with the way that the PDF was created in the first place?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there,

I'm just checking with the powers that be that the PDF does not contain any sensitive data.

In the meantime I did try another test and found that if I attach the PDF as an underlay, the tree symbols are retained ..... but if I then go on to bind the PDF, the symbols become captial 'L's as noted previously.

Hi @Anonymous

The tree-like symbol in PDF is not geometry, but its text. After importing the PDF the text looking like a tree is getting replaced with "L" since the respective font(TTF) is not available in your system. There are actually two fonts used in the PDF, one is "ESRIOrdnance.ttf" which is used to create the tree, and the other one I do not know what font is that.

I tried to install one of the fonts(I have attached the same) and then imported the PDF and you can see the result in the snapshot below🙂

You may need to ask the supplier of the PDF for the missing fonts or convert all text to geometry and send it as a PDF.

In your PDF, they used what are called "shape" fonts, to create the shapes/trees in the file:
