Open .sv $ files with AutoCAD Application

I lost a file and tried to recover it with .sv $ but instead of changing the name, I changed the application with which the .sv $ files are opened and now they open with AutoCAD so I cannot recover the autosave. How can I change the application with which the .sv $ files are opened to the default one?

Hello @Anonymous

Welcome to the AutoCAD Forum.

As a first step, please check the following article which contains all information about sv$ files: Understanding backup and autosave files in AutoCAD

Important: sv$ files and .bak files can easily be renamed to dwg file to be able to open them from within the AutoCAD Application.

Please check the following points:

  1. If your sv$ file is changed now to an dwg file, it still contains all information and you can open it with AutoCAD. No recovery manager is needed in this case. Did you open the drawing - does it include the information and data you suggested?
  2. If you want to restore your dwg file back to sv$, you can change the extension back to sv$. I recommend to create a copy of the file before doing this step. Step 1 is still the preferred one.
  3. If you want to change in general an the Application which is opening a certain object type, please do the following: Make sure you see the extension of the data type in your Windows Explorer. Select the file and press the right mouse button to see the context menu. Select "Open With" and choose an application. Make sure you select the toggle item "always open the file type with this application".

yo don't need to change the application default. just rename the .SV$ to .DWG and it will be openable in autocad. to change back to default applications you need to reset settings to default. thanks

@ennujozlagam

plz stop your post about 'Reset to default', it  a bad try for this issue and miss the issue.

(ACAD installation will not set a default program for .sv$ files, because of this fact also a 'Reset to default' will not change it.)

@Anonymous If you don't like the DWG Icon, you can choose another program easily.

Right Click to *.sv$ file, Open with ...[Choose another program, for example "Editor"]

Looks better? okay

(it is irrelevant which program is linked to sv$ files)

Or ask your administrator to reset the setting to "none program"

As hint:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.sv$
