Hi,

I would like to open dwgs in different istance. One dwg - one acad.exe istance.

Before I used to set:

FILETABCLOSE

SDI:1

AutoCAD DWG Laucher

On the 2019/2020 this doesn't work. I'm going crazy.

It's not a problem, i am missing the point of problem 😉

The problem is, you are talking about the windows function for a doubleclick on a dwg file. For example in windows explorer.

Correct?

2019 and newer are not designed for it.

(Possible if you create your own "open dwg" program, but not ootb)

Open the program two times and open the dwg by drag an drop,

Or use Open command

Thanks for your answer.

The point of the problem is this.

I have PC with 2 screens.

I need to open two (o more DWGs) at the same time.

I would like to see one one the left screen and the other one the right screen.

I would like to have separate instance, because if AutoCAD crask, i never loose all the progress on each file.

I use this on 2016 and 2017. All the software I have is able to open more instance (Photoshop, C4D, etc.)

This is not secondary o optionals. It is part of a my workflow.

How I can open two o more DWGs in 2 different screens, for example?

Same in AutoCAD, start AutoCAD with it's icon on the desktop, as often as you want.

You can then use AutoCAD's _OPEN command to select a file you want to open in the session where you started the command. As an alternative you can drag & drop a dwg-file from Windows Explorer into the AutoCAD window you want the file to be opened.

Hi @infoH8EQN , starting from AutoCAD 2019, the SDI = 1 method is not supported anymore. The alternative ways of opening drawings in separate instances are the ones already discussed in this thread. See: Multiple drawings cannot be opened in AutoCAD

If you have additional feedback about this occurrence, I strongly suggest you to provide it via this form: Product Feedback

no, it is clear.

I'm disappointed with it. AutoCAD is very expensive and some functionalities help me a lot with my work.

Did you see this older post's solution https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-lt-forum/sdi-1-not-working-plus-cad-opens-to-blank-screen-ins...

And as noted by others, this from Autodesk https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-v...

But... since many users report your desire as a problem when they associate DWG file types to "autoCAD" instead of "DWG LAUNCHER" this may be a backdoor option for you to explore as well.

1st fix:

FILETABCLOSE

SDI=1

doesn't work.

The Autodesk solution is time-consuming.

Sometimes I need to work with 5 Dwgs at the same time in multiple screens. I understand the users with the opposite problem (multiple acad instances) but I would like to have a choice as before.

Before was easy:

  • sdi=1+dwg launcher (multiple instances)
  • sdi=0+autoCAD (one instance)

Accepted solution

You need to launch AutoCAD from the icon, not by double clicking a .dwg file.  Ensure sys var "sdi" =0.
