No selection cycling menu when selecting object inside a field

Hi,

There is actually a bug inside AutoCAD 2025 when selecting an object inside a field (ex: after clicking select object in the window "Insert a field"). The selection cycling menu does not show when multiple objects are overlapping. This feature was working in the previous version (AutoCAD 2024).

Selection cycling seems to work elsewhere, but not when inserting or editing a field which is pretty annoying. New version should be better not worse...

Thanks,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Thanks for reporting what you are seeing.  Have you applied the updates for AutoCAD 2025 and does this still happen?  Are you using the same drawing when you see this?  If it still happens after

I would also suggest you reported it to support?  That way if others are having this issue, they will add you to an exiting bug report.

Thanks and please let me know if you see the same thing with all the updates applied.

Yes all updates are installed. Same problem in différent files. This options is at software level, cannot be customize separatly un each file.

If I'm not wrong, I cannot contact support with educational licenses (I'm a collégial teacher).

Thanks

Thanks Martin for the update.  I’ll see if it’s a known issue tomorrow.  I do believe that each school has a way to contact support for help.  I’ll look into that as well.

I would also suggest you check out the AutoCAD Customer Council Beta Program.  It’s a great place to help shape the next version of AutoCAD.

Hi Martin,

Just want to clarify, are you using AutoCAD Windows version, or AutoCAD for MAC version?

And can you send me a small sample drawing that shows this issue and the basic steps.   You can send it to my first.last@autodesk.com.  Just change first.last to bud.schroeder.

Thanks and looking forward to getting these details.

I'm using the PC version. There is nothing special to reproduce the error. Draw to line, one line over the other, create a text box, then insert a field inside the text box. While picking the object (one of the two lines), no menu will appear...

FYI, AutoCAD 2023 and 2024 do not do what you wrote here following your steps, what am I missing?

and other version also, NOT

If you create a MText by using command FIELD, it works, but if you add a field into an existing object, it doesn't work.

@teco_ss you remembering wrong, or do you still have the 2023/2024 version installed for tests?

You can use Shift+Spacebar to turn on object cycling in either version. It's not as nice as modern selection cycling, which I find does not work in 2024 or 2025 but at least it's selection cycling.

Are you sure you are on-topic?

We talking about Field command, option: Object

The object selection is very strict and not working like the usual object selection.

Yes, I am with the subject. I agree that the normal Selection Cycling is not working during Insert Field but I wanted point out that selection cycling is available if you use Shift+spacebar. You don't get the dialog and you have to click and watch to see which object it wants to select. This is selection cycling that came out before the modern times. It still works. 😉

Okay Tim, thank you for trying to clarify what you mean, but I am familiar with the old and still existing cycling option.

Please share a Screencast what shows how it works on your side, in described specific situation  (Draw to line, one line over the other, create a text box, then insert a field inside the text box),

 thanks in advance

At around 0:24 is where I hold Shift + Spacebar and then select the stack of objects. This turns on cycling. Now I move the cursor to the side and click. You will see the objects being cycled each time I click.

I know this can be done, but far more complex to explain than the simple menu of the sélection cycling to students. As I said in the first post, this was working is in AutoCAD 2024

I was in no way advocating the old method over current. I was merely pointing out a workaround. You can still selection cycle, although in a painful way.

Thx Tim,

I can not reproduce it this way on my Acad, but if I use my (older) Civil, it also doesn't work for other commands too (like copy or move)

we / I have to search what are the differences, perhaps it solved mcoteNR6G6 problem too.

As a proof of what I said (see at 0:34), the menu (selection cycling) is not showing when trying to select an object over another. The video was done on my computer, but I get the same results on the computers at school. I'm using the PC version of AutoCAD 2025 with all updates installed. Thanks

All confirmed that until now, but no one confirmed that it works in 2023/2024!

Anyone here who can use selectioncycling in a running system  2023/2024?

-

Offtopic / Another thing:

And we found that the old cycling style works also differently.

You and tcorey can use it, I can't

Solved: It works the way tcorey wrote, I ignored the details and used my usual way to use it, see my answer below.

I dont have AutoCAD 2024 anymore on my computer, but I gave a course last year (and also a few more before) talking about that specific manipulation and I can confirmed it worked. I ask to students to draw polyligns around each room of their architectural plan and then report the area of each room using field in text boxes. As the polylign to select is always over other objects, that menu is necessary.

thank you @tcorey

It was a case as 1000 before: Daily, repetitive use makes you blind - stupid 🤐

You are using another way for cycle option, I ignored this two times (seems I thought it doesn't matter, my foul)

For usual I am using cycling by hovering the cursor on top of the object stack

and pressing Shift+Space, release Space and hit it again will jump to the next object in stack,

if I see the right one, I click the object then - This method doesn't work in this situation,

but the one way works as you said. Shame on me, I should have tried it 1:1 as described before.
The fact that it makes a difference is of course also rubbish

{one tiny bug more on the list and this "offtopic" thing is clarified}

And now, I will do my last test for today -  for the original topic
