Navisworks Coordination model detach

Anonymous
Not applicable
I attached a Navisworks model with little problem. Now I want to detach it. Problem is that when I right-click on the file in the x-ref dialog box the detach option is grayed-out. Why is this? Also, when attaching the file it did not give me a choice between "ATTACH" & "OVERLAY" but it is acting like an attachment and therefore is attaching to any file that I have reference my main file. Can this be changed?

grayed-out means it's not an XREF in the file you are in: more than likely it's in another file that is actually XREFed in your file instead (a child XREF so to speak).

I attached it to a file. But cannot detach it from that file. Only unload or reload.

Is it still present in the file, or did you delete it before trying to detach it?

It is still present. I can not detach it. I created a level and changed the attachment to that level and turned it off so it will not show up in other files. As a test I created a new file and attached the same file and was then able to detach it so it has to be something wrong with the file.

Did this ever get resolved, i have the same issue and cannot detach a coordination model. Yes the model still shows in the file, and it was directly referenced into this file.

Thank you , I have the same problem with Plant3D and one NWD, the solution (for now) is to select all xref and detach it all together.

Why is it not possible to detach a NWD?

As stated above, it is probably referenced by one or more of the other XREFs as an attachment.

No, it is not. As addressed by this reply earlier:

and as I have run across multiple times myself. It's a bug and assuming otherwise is the reason this bug hasn't been fixed in the last 8 years.

Then report it and find out more from Autodesk direct: Here are ways to open a support case with Autodesk if you are on subscription to seek out Autodesk Support's help:

This thread started 8 years ago, but there's been recent activity, and I just had this happen to me. I can confirm that the NWD in question in my case is not xref'd by any of the other xref's. It is listed as "nested" and can't be detached.

However, I noticed in my case that there are other nested, orphaned xref's in the drawing. One of the orphaned files also happened to be directly xref'd by the main drawing, and is not orphaned. Like so:

Main drawing

  > File 1 (which is found)

  > File 2 (which is found)

  >    > File 1 (path is different than above, and is orphaned)

  >    > File 3 (orphaned)

  > NWD (coordination model)

In the above configuration, the NWD shows as being a nested xref, and can't be detached.

If I detach File 2, which eliminates all the orphans, the NWD becomes "un-nested", and can be detached.

If I resolve the orphaned files by putting them in the folders where File 2 is looking for them, the NWD file is "un-nested", and can be detached.

I agree with @pendean wholeheartedly. If you can reliably reproduce the bug, you have a very good chance that Autodesk will fix it. I've had success with a couple of very annoying and very obscure bugs being fixed when I could provide a way for Autodesk to consistently reproduce the error. I'm not sure what parts of my exercise here are relevant to this bug, but if I can show that this can be reproduced, I will definitely submit a ticket.

It seems I also have this problem. I have a nwd file that I attached as a coordination model and it seems there is no way to detach/ permanently delete it which is quite annoying as it slows down my assembly.

Identify which XREF it is nested in and detach it from that file.
