Modify Length

I have worked with autocad for a while and now i'm facing problems with the basics.

I draw a line, dimension it. now that i want to change its length i used to double click its dimension and edit the value hence editing the length. But some weird setting now just change the text and not the actual length of the line.

Am i missing on something obvious?

Hello

Welcome to the Autodesk / AutoCAD Forums !

1) The DIMs are associated to the Geometry. So if you stretch the Geometry, the DIMs will follow ...

2) To change the Length of Line or Arc, please use the command: LENGTHEN

Hi...

You can change length of the line by using the lengthen command or by using the grip editing. You can access the lengthen command under modify panel under home tab. (OR) Select the line and  place the cross hair near to the end grip point. so u can access the lengthen command and enter the extra length required. If the dimension is associated, it will be updated automatically. Hope this will help...

Hi,

AutoCAD never behave as you describe. editing dimensions is rarely used and have a lot of restrictions. dimensions have the ability to follow the items that it's associated with. for your case just select the line (without command) and select the grip (blue rectangle) and stretch it to see that your dimension will automatically modified.

Use driving dimensions rather than driven dimensions.

There are several other commands that can change the length of a Line that have not yet been mentioned:  STRETCH, TRIM, EXTEND, BREAK, CHANGE.  If a Dimension is actually tied to the Line, it will update in any case.  If it's not, but is just tied to its own definition points which are at the ends of the Line, it will still update if you use STRETCH, or if you select both the Line and the Dimension first and use grip-editing.
