Model Space Layer State Questions

Having trouble getting my head wrapped around this.

If I have a drawing that never had a layer state assigned in model space, then all I have is layers and if I change those layer settings then thats still what I have.... layers whose properties have changed. And everytime I view model space that is what I will have. If I change something, I've updated my layers. Simple.

But, as soon as I create a layer state for model space, now I have something different. I have this new base layer state that I've created say "All on all Thawed. But I also have the potential to have additional layer conditions and things get complicated in a hurry.

Now, if I open a drawing that I or someone else has been working on, there is the very real chance that some sort of layer manipulation could have taken place with the intent of those changes to be the newly revised layer desires, but if they never get saved to the layer state then issues start happening.

At this point you have 2 choices. You can either:

1. update the old layer state with what you currently have in model space and deal with overrides that you didn't intend,

2. Reassign the old layer state and throw out all the changes that were made to the layers, where at least some of which are layers that you wanted to keep.

Neither one of these options seems good to me.

I keep running into this and not sure how to address.

This is what I want to have happen.

I need to have an "all on and all thawed" layer state so I can see everything I have in the drawing in model space.

I also need to have various layer states in model space to view various types of plans.

I also need a way to make sure that for MODEL SPACE ALL of the various layer states that I have created in model space are consistent color, lineweights, linetypes etc. This needs to be consistent because I only want to make changes to layer properties at the viewport level in paperspace. Basically make a change and have ALL the model space layer states update with those changes.

To that end it would also be ideal to have any changes I make to color, linetype, lineweight etc in model space to also update into my layout layer states.

As best I can tell is that to make this happen I'm going to have to update ALL of my various model space layer states when I make a change to any of the layer properties if I want them all to agree. Then I also need to go out to all my layout layer states and update those layer states. Then I have to also update all the viewports to the newly revised layer states.

Seems (is) tedious to the nth degree.

Am I missing something?

Suggestions?

How about this....

Is there a way to globally update all of my layer states so they have the same layer settings?

If so, is there a way to do this but only have various parameters update?

Would not want the layers that are frozen to be affected

Short of that is there a way to update a single layer state so that all the layer properties match what is currently showing up in model space.

Let's start here.

LISP or SCRIPT customizations is the way to go if you want total and absolute control 100% of the time.

You can edit a Layerstate anytime you want, just use the LAYERSTATE command popup button labelled EDIT after you select the one you want to modify.

Thanks pendean-

Makes my head spin thinking about how I could create a lisp to do what I want to happen.

This is what I'm doing currently but lots of issues getting it to work like I want it to unfortunately.

That's why there is a dedicated general and LISP  customization forum, link is below, just remember to share with them full exact details and samples (DWG, text, excel, whatever) too https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/visual-lisp-autolisp-and-general/bd-p/130

I might take a look. Dabbled in lisp 15 years ago and found it interesting. Might be time to try to pick it up again! Thanks for the prompt.
