Materials shifting after I render the model

Anonymous

I am working on a model of a house.  I go in and add models for pictures to the walls.  I them add an actual JPG material to the picture model by attaching the material to the model.  Then I use Material Mapping to manipulate the image in REALISTIC view so that the JPG covers the area that I want it to and I make sure that it is positioned, rotated, moved, so it appears to be in the right spot on the screen.  Then I render the image and the material will appear shifted to the left and down in the rendering.  What is going on here?  I included 2 images so you can see what I'm talking about.  One image shows the model in AutoCAD how it appears to be in the REALISTIC mode and how I used the program to place it and the other one shows the rendered view with the shifted material.  The round cylinder that looks like a plate on the adjacent wall is actually a clock and I attached the face of a clock to this model and rotated, moved, positions this so it appeared in the right spot too and you can just see that just a sliver shows up on the left side of this model.  What am I doing wrong?

Alfred,

This is the model I was using for the clock.  I built this model separate from the house model and inserted it into the house model after I moved the image to the correct spot.  When I inserted it into the House model, I had to rotate the model and move it and when I did I had to use Materials Mapping again to realign the material.  Is this the best way to do this or should I build everything in the same file.  I would like to be able to build them in a separate file and insert them as blocks because this big file is getting harder to manipulate things because the file is getting pretty large.  If I bring them in as a block and have to rotate and move the block, does the material stay in the right place.  Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Tim

Hi @Anonymous,

What is your OS, exact version of AutoCAD (Type ABOUT) and what is your graphics card?  Can you attach a screenshot of the GRAPHICSCONFIG window?

I want to check drivers, settings on your graphics performance and to see if I can find anything else on materials shifting in rendering.  If this is working in a Cloud Render, it might be worth performing a Reset Settings to Default to see if out-of-the-box settings fixes this issue.

If you want to bundle all the material files as well as your model and render settings I am happy to try this on my workstation to see if my results vary from yours.

Here is a quick description of Material Mapping too.

John,

I am on a computer that is using Windows 7 Enterprise, Service Pack 1, AutoCAD 2015 SP2.  I am including the graphics configuration image I saved.  Take a look at these and let me know if I have anything that needs to be changed.  If we can't find anything, I will send you the files and we can go from there.

Thanks for your help on this, I want to figure out what is happening so I can fix it in the future.

Hi @Anonymous,

All of that looks good except I believe there is a newer driver available for you graphics card here.

It would also be interesting to see how this behaves in newer AutoCAD versions since the rendering engine is different. Is it possible for you to install a Trial and test for me?

John,

I updated the driver and I tried to render the image and it was still shifted.  I then moved the material so the lower left "grip" was located on the lower left corner where I wanted the picture to be so it would be located on the origin of the model.  I rendered it again and it appears in the correct spot but it is not in the correct spot on the preview where I positioned in in the first place in the "realistic" view.  I hope this helps figure out what the problem is.  I can't really load a trial version of the newer software.  I will be out till next Tuesday for the holidays so if you come up with another idea let me know and I will get back to you as soon as I can.  I included the 2 images.  I froze the frame layer in the one that looks correct so it won't appear in that image.

Thanks again,

Tim

Hi @Anonymous,

Try this - I didn't have all your texture images so the one on the TV is set to the architectural picture.

I cleaned up the JPG images first so there were no portions off to the side that I had to adjust for. I rotated them a bit to get square too.

For the clock, I rotated the 3Dsolid 180 degrees. The picture and TV I applied without tiling and everything seems to be ok.

Please take a look and let me know if it works better for you.

John,

I used the file that you sent to me and it appears correct in the ACAD dwg.jpg in the REALISTIC view but when I render it the image shifts (rendering.jpg).  The interesting thing is the clock and the image I used for the TV look fine and they are images I found on the web but the image we are having a problem with are pictures I took with my digital camera of pictures I have on my wall.  It appears that is where the issue is coming from.  Does that make sense?  I am just trying to figure out what is going wrong so in the future I don't have this same problem affecting my images.

Thanks,

Tim

John,

I used the modified images that you sent to me and the first "boat" picture rendered exactly like it appeared so I figured the issue was corrected by using your images.  Then I went to the "archway" picture and rendered it and it was misaligned.  Do you have any idea what could be causing this problem?  I will try to send you the files tomorrow.

Thanks,

Tim

John,

Here are the original files I sent to you.  It has the house model, the boat picture, the arch picture, and the clock image.  I didn't attach the picture that went on the TV because I wasn't having problems with that image.  Let me know what you figure out.

Hi @Anonymous,

OK, I gave this another try for you.

I used Photoshop to clean up each of the image files (Straighten, crop, adjust)

I made each one into a new material with 0 rotation and no tiling

I applied them to the solids in the picture frames.

They look correct in the model and when I render.

John,

The problem has to be something on my system.  Any ideas what it could be?  I am using a Dell Precision M2800.  You know most of the rest, I'm on Windows 7 Enterprise Sp. 1, 8GB of RAM, Intel Core I5-4210M CPU @260 GHz, 64 bit OS and I already sent the info for the graphics card.    I have been talking to IT and they are thinking it might be a good idea to switch me to a desktop but I like the mobility of the laptop.  I know you are not able to recreate my issues, I just want to know what I'm doing wrong or what is messing with image placement on my system.  I have modified my images with PAINT/IRFANVIEW/Photoshop and I still have problems with them.  Any thoughts on where else to look?

Hi @Anonymous,

Did the drawing and images I sent work correctly on your machine? Could you try adding my materials on a different computer to see if the model behaves there?

I wonder if your CPU is a little underpowered for what you are doing too. I don't know if that is related in any fashion.

If this is only happening on your one machine then I think the options might be:

Upgrade your laptop or switch to a desktop computer.

Upgrade your AutoCAD to a current version ( I would like you to give the Trial a shot to see if the problem exists there first)

John,

I retried your images and everything looks great.  I am going to make sure that I use just the image and I am not going to tile the images and see where that gets me.  I did add the last image (the archway) and for some reason it would only attach to the backside of the model.  So I rotated it 180 degrees and it worked.  Any idea why this happened?  Is there anyway to contact you directly?  Thanks for your help!!!

Hi @Anonymous,

I sent you a personal message. You might check your SPAM to make sure it did not end up there.
