Materials shifting after I render the model

Anonymous
Not applicable

I am working on a model of a house.  I go in and add models for pictures to the walls.  I them add an actual JPG material to the picture model by attaching the material to the model.  Then I use Material Mapping to manipulate the image in REALISTIC view so that the JPG covers the area that I want it to and I make sure that it is positioned, rotated, moved, so it appears to be in the right spot on the screen.  Then I render the image and the material will appear shifted to the left and down in the rendering.  What is going on here?  I included 2 images so you can see what I'm talking about.  One image shows the model in AutoCAD how it appears to be in the REALISTIC mode and how I used the program to place it and the other one shows the rendered view with the shifted material.  The round cylinder that looks like a plate on the adjacent wall is actually a clock and I attached the face of a clock to this model and rotated, moved, positions this so it appeared in the right spot too and you can just see that just a sliver shows up on the left side of this model.  What am I doing wrong?

Hello @Anonymous,

I think this topic is related to AutoCAD render, not cloud rendering, so i would like to move this topic to AutoCAD forum for there may be more experts could be helpful.

Thanks,

Hi,

can you please upload the drawing with at least this one image from the picture?

Also let us know which version of AutoCAD and service pack you are using (needed as there were some changes to render engine in the latest releases).

As you were in another forum: did you use cloud render or local render?

I would like to attach this drawing file but it is 12MB in size and the materials that I added are pretty large too.  Will your system allow files of this size?  I am using AutoCAD 2015 Sp2.  I have rendered these files both in the cloud and on my computer and they both have had results like the ones I sent earlier.  Let me know about the file size issue if there is one or where to send the file and we can proceed.

Hi @Anonymous,

Put your files in a ZIP file and attach them to a post. I am eager to see what is going on!

Hi,

>> Will your system allow files of this size?

No problem for me 😉

But to get it more easy: copy your dwg-file, in that file delete objects which also have textures that are not needed to test that case. Then run command _PURGE to clean out the unused materials and at least test again if you see that issue.

If yes: run _ETRANSMIT ==> this will zip the dwg with referenced files (also texture maps) together to one file. Upload that file.

I just deleted some things and the DWG is 5MB and I have 2 images that are 6MB and 1 that is 110KB.  I tried to zip them using 7zip and they didn't really get any smaller.  Do you have an email address or do you want me to send them in 3 different messages?

Hi,

you can zip all files together and upload it here in the forum (if I'm correct the upload limit here is about 70MB).

Here they are.  The images I'm having a problem with are the clock to the left of the TV, the picture on the left wall of the TV, and the picture on the back wall in the dinning room wall.  Let me know if you can figure out why the images shift.

Hi,

I looked to the clock for now and yes, it's strange how the texture is bound to a specific location. When you move the clock the texture stays at a location independent of the position of the clock.

And I don't have any idea why that happens (well, it might depend how the geometry for that object was created, but not sure at the moment).

The solution might be:

  • create a new cylinder
  • assign the material to that new object
  • run command _MATERIALMAP and assign the mapping coordinates ... the gizmo can then be moved and resized (using it's grips) to make the image of the clock fitting to the geometry.

One word to image sizes: your 2 images (IMG_0505 and IMG_0507) have about 5000x4000 pixel. I guess you never render your camera views to a size of 5000x4000. So the resolution of the JPG files can never be reached for your output ... but they cost render time. Reduce them and your rendering will speed up significantly.

I was wondering if the size of the images had something to do with it but I just went into a new drawing, made a rectangle, attached one of the images with the same file I sent you that is 5000x4000 (I have to lower the resolution of my camera), and it looked exactly the way I wanted it to look.  One more question.  If I make a model and attach an image to it and save the file, and then insert that file into a larger model, in this case the house model, if I rotate the model, does the image get messed up and I have to rotate the Mapping Materials?  I did that with a couple of things in this design.  One being the clock and one of the pictures I'm having a problem with.  The reason I did it this way was because this model is getting pretty big and it has some lag when you build the models in the entire assembly.  Is there one way that is better then the other for work like this and could that be what the problem is?

HI @Anonymous,

I too saw this behavior. I rebuilt the clock and remapped the material to it. I remapped the Boat picture too and now they both seem to be behaving better.

What did you do take remap them?  I just made a rectangle in a new file and used the same image for the model and brought it in and rendered it and it looked correct after I rendered it.  I also included another version of the picture in the model manipulated using Materials Mapping and it looks correct in the model but it is shifted in the rendering.  What or how did you change it?  Also, if you look close, I did fix the clock!!! 🙂

John,

I did make the clock, boat picture, arch picture, and a portrait picture outside of this model and inserted them into this model.  Could that be why we are having this issue with the images?  The TV has a image attached to it and everything looks great with that but I made that model in this model, I didn't insert it in like the other ones.  Thanks you for your help.

Hi @Anonymous,

I actually made a new clock outside of the model and then inserted it too.

I tried playing with your clock and it looked like the material was on the back face so I created my own.

Can you upload that drawing with the clock?

Maybe we can find a way to keep the mapping during inserting that dwg into a new drawing (but I know that AutoCAD is struggling with mapping assignments as well as material-in-block for a long time now so it is tricky anyway).

I will try and redo the model for the pictures and see what kind of results I get.  If I build a model in a new drawing file, attach the material, and then insert the model into the HOUSE model and then I need to rotate it in some direction in 3D, will the material be in the correct spot or will I have to use MATERIAL MAPPING to adjust according to how I rotated in the first place?

Hi,

>> will the material be in the correct spot or will I have to use MATERIAL MAPPING

As there are so many changes with mapping between different AutoCAD releases and service packs ... the best answer is when you try the workflow on a small sample.

When you have created a drawing "CLOCK" and there is all correct with units, size, material and texture mapping I would save that drawing and insert that drawing into your house plan. Don't explode the block as long as possible. By default that is the best way.

If insert as block does not work you might try to insert the clock as XRef, maybe that works better, I don't know (can't look to 2015 at the moment).

Hi @Anonymous,

Is the clock I rebuilt behaving properly for you? Have you tried creating blocks of the other objects? Please let me know your status. and if you like, you can attach more image files for the missing textures and I can try to rebuild those objects as well.

John,

I'm having strange results now.  I never used your model, I wanted to figure out what I was doing wrong.  So I went in and did like you described and made a new model for the pictures in the living room and the dining room and attached the images and I rendered to the cloud and they looked like I wanted them to look.  Then I tried to render them on my computer and the images shifted again.  Is this a graphics card issue that was brought up before in this post?  Have you ever seen these results before and if so, what was the problem?

Thanks,
