What are your system specs?  Does this happen with all DWG's, or just some?

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for posting your questions here. I encountered a similar crash in AutoCAD 2016 about a month ago, and updating my graphics driver to a certified version for AutoCAD 2016 products resolved the issue for me.

With that said, could you provide the following information?

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm checking in today to see if you're able to provide the information I requested in order to troubleshoot your material editing fatal error. Is the issue still occurring, or have you been able to restore the functionality in the program?

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I was out of my office the latter part of last week and didn't have access to my computer. Since this is a Sony owned computer, and most of it is locked down after the "hack", I am unable to find out what graphics card this machine has. The processer is an Intel Xeon CPU ES-2620v3 @ 2.40 GHz.

As far as the 3DCONFIG is concerned it is as follows:
[cid:image001.png@01D0E3C3.82F07930]

This problem with being unable to edit or create new materials is happening on all drawings not just specific drawings. I have repaired AutoCAD with no change. Thanks for trying to help with this as it is so frustrating.

Thanks again,

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm sorry to hear the issue is still occurring, and in all drawings.

The image file didn't post in your last response, so I can't see your Graphics Performance screenshot. It should look something like this, and displays the graphics card and driver version:

Sample_3DCONFIG.png

Once you know which card and driver version AutoCAD is using, you can look up the card on the Autodesk Certified Hardware site and make sure your driver version is one of the certified drivers for your card (assuming the card is on the certified list). In the example above, the driver is out of date and should be updated to the certified version listed on the site, which can be downloaded directly.

One more thing to add. If you work through this, and the issue persists, I'd like to know:

Did the fatal errors begin around the same time your machine was "locked down"? If so, you may want to work through the optimization tips in this article, and ensure that your IT department has added exlcusions to any antivirus/security programs that could be interfereing with AutoCAD.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for posting your graphics card and system information.

I looked up your graphics card (NVIDIA Quadro K4200) on the Autodesk Certified Hardware site.

There is one tested and certified driver version (9.18.13.4121), which is not the one you have installed (9.18.13.4066).

I recommend downloading and installing the certified driver version (9.18.13.4121), which you can find here.

Sorry so late in getting back to you, we've had a busy month and I've been "working around" (not rendering materials) this problem to get a lot of drawings out. I just had a chance to download and install the driver your recommended. ..... no difference. (NUTS!)

Looked for a "REPAIR AutoCAD 2016" anywhere on my subscription page with no avail. I'm ready to give up!!!

To remind you of my problem; Whenever I try to edit an existing or create a new material I get this error message and AutoCAD shuts down.

FATAL ERROR: Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x1128 Excepting at d2f61230h

I've tried to download and install the Service Pack 1 and I get the error; A problem prevented the Service Pack from being installed. Contact your system administrator.  Error Code: 1612

Since I am the system administrator .... I'm at a loss of what to do.  Everything is shut down, we have access to all the program files .... don't know what else I can do to make this work.

As you can see, I've tried almost everything I know of to get this program working but nothing seems to help .... can you help me?

Has this problem been resolved? I am experiencing the same frustrating and crippling fatal error.

Same problem here, not the first time and happened with previous AutoCad versions as well. AutoCad 2017, OS Win10, graphics NVIDIA Quadro K3000M with 354.56 driver. Graphics is compliant with Autodesk Certified hardware, all software legit and up to date.

How to fix this??

Continued to have the same problem on more complicated drawings. What I did to circumvent this is to go into graphics config and turn off the graphics accelerator off to edit the materials. Once all my materials are edited, I can then turn the graphics accelerator back on to view my drawings correctly. (Most of the time I just leave it off and use my renders to check alignments and looks etc.)

Good luck!!

HI Jody - and all with the same problem,

For now, my problem seems solved!

  • Close AutoCad;
  • Find the directory "C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2017\R21.0\enu\Recent", where the disk and user nomination may vary according to what you have set in your system;
  • In there look for picture files "Materials editor open . .  file name".
  • Delete those picture files.
  • Restart AutoCad, et voila . .

Seems AutoCad does not or does not always delete the last files related to the material and to many of those available corrupts things.

Related to this is the annoying problem of editor popup windows appearing off screen (I switch from multiple displays to single display when out of office) and being unable to find these when right clicking in taskbar and cascading all open windows. Should you have a solution for that . . .

Hope this works for you as well,

Best regards,

Peter

Same problem popped up again . .

So a little update:

2 things to do to prevent this:

  • Delete recent "Materials Editor Open" files (shortcuts);
  • And consistently close Materials Editor and Materials Browser after each use.

Requires "MATBROWSEROPEN" every time you need it, but no fatal errors.
