layers have a black square instead of white?

Hi guys,

Home Tab > Layers ribbon (see the attachment), some of the layers have a black square next to them. What does this black square mean? How do I change them back to a white square?

When it happens to me, it means that AutoCAD has leaked enough memory to not work anymore and needs to be restarted.

The layer has a black color assigned.

Sorry if I misunderstand something, but this is the only thing I see in your screenshot. If I assign a different color to a layer I see the square in this color...
