Laptop recommendations 2020

Apologies if this has been asked recently - I could only see a thread from 2018 - please feel free to point me in the right direction if there are newer replies!

I'm about to re-enter the world of Interior Design after about 20 years and am looking for recommendations for a laptop to run AutoCAD alongside other software. I haven't got an endless budget, but am happy to spend well on something that will last, without lag and is easy for me to use (this counts out Apple for me, as I've never used it!).

I've been looking at a couple of expensive options - the Dell XPS 15" and the Surface Book 2 15" but if there's a really decent cheaper option that would be great! I love the look and feel of the Surface Book 2, but don't want to fall into the trap of style over substance.

Any recommendations welcomed.

Thanks in advance

Hello @Anonymous,

I can't provide specific recommendations, but I suggest reviewing the system requirements for AutoCAD to make sure the computer meets or exceeds them.

Thanks for the reply Natasha.

I've looked at the system requirements and the bit I'm need some advice on is the the graphics card element really. I'm not hugely computer minded!! Sit me at a computer that set up for purpose and I'm fine, but this is a bit different. I don't want to make an expensive error

If you are only drafting 2D lines and text, nothing more (you either are now or never will do 3D/rendering if reentering ID after a long absence, its not common for your line of work to suddenly leap like that), the Dell XPS 15" with specs that meet to exceed the 'recommended' sections of the 2020 system requirements will be the better full-day-work choice.

Video card only needs to exceed the requirements listed. That's it. Dell sales folks can walk you through the nitty gritty details, they know AutoCAD, if you need further help.

Not sure what the specs are on the Dell XPS you are looking at, but one of our guys (who is only an occasional AutoCAD user) has an XPS, and is very happy with it. Runs ACAD LT 2020 fine, no lag. (he does 2D drafting/annotation only) Specs: Core i7 9750H, GTX-1060 4GB graphics, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 250GB SSD primary, 1TB 7200RPM HDD secondary, Win10Pro.

Hope this helps.
