Keys/Legends in AutoCAD: Best Practice?

What is the best practice for keys & legends in AutoCAD? Blocks or X-ref?

I am currently using blocks to create standardized legends/keys. These blocks are placed within a layout file (on their relevant sheet) that is copied for every new project. I have attached this for reference.

This practice appears to work well other than the 'bloating' of the layer files within the layout file - ie. A key for an Electrical Schematic will include the blocks on the 'Electrical Systems' layer.  So, any alternative ideas or improvements on how to manage keys & legends would be welcomed.

Are you referring to this Legend which you've inserted as a BLOCK called Legend - Building Systems Schematic in Drawing Layouts.dwg:

That's a very sizeable block. If you have the space to place this on each sheet it would be handy to reference or you may consider only placing this onto a General Notes sheet.  Also I would not insert it as a BLOCK but keep it as an XREF so  if there are any changes made it'll update automatically.
