i change color of xref layers in the layer manager.            but inside the xrefs,  if its not set 'bylayer',  i cant change the color unless i go in and create a copy and start editing...

my question is,   is it possible on the new versions of autocad ?     i saw a similar question from 2015,  and i wonder if something changed since then with it.

Open the layer properties manager and click on the gear symbol in the upper right corner to get the layer settings dialog box.  Then click "Treat xref object properties as bylayer".

This is also the XREFOVERRIDE system variable. Set it to 1
